“Let me get this straight. You had arranged to meet with Mr. Privet at four o’clock. When you arrived, Ms. Earhart showed you inside and handed you the coffee he requested. You carried it to the room and gave it to him, then started your meeting.” Detective Werner leaned forward in the leather armchair and made eye contact with Violeta. A box of tissues sat in the middle of the table between them.

“That’s correct.” Violeta nodded and brushed a shaky hand through her black hair.

“And at that point in time, Mr. Privet was alive and well.”

“Yes.” She blotted her face with a tissue.

“Does your ex-husband have a habit of drinking coffee during his meetings?” he asked.

“Yes. He is very fond of his coffee.” Her teary-eyed gaze shifted around the grand hall.

“What about you?”

“I do not drink it.” Violeta pressed her red lips together.

“What about tea?” The detective twirled his pen in his hand.

“Excuse me?” Her voice cracked.

“Answer the question, please.” He frowned.

“No. I do not drink tea.” Violeta sniffed.

“Is that why Ms. Earhart only prepared one cup for your meeting?” He sat back and jotted down a few notes on the notepad.

“Yes. I told her not to bother.”

“I see. So, what was your meeting with him about?” Detective Werner circled something on the paper and looked up at her.

“Money. I wanted to ask him for help.” A pained expression crossed Violeta’s face. She fidgeted with the hem of her dress and avoided making eye contact with him.

“Care to elaborate?” He gestured to her with a wave of his hand.

Violeta exhaled a tired breath. “I am not proud of it, but I am in a lot of debt, detective. Dorian was helping me with the financial problems until a few months ago.”

“Why did he stop?” He made a note of her comment.

“I don’t know. He said he wanted to cut me off. I came by today to talk to him.” She stared at her hands, folded on her dress.

“To convince him to loan you some money, you mean?” Detective Werner guessed.

“I guess you could say that.” She shrugged.

“And? Did he agree to help you?”

“No. He told me to stay away from him.” Violeta shifted in her seat and fingered the bracelet that dangled from her wrist.

“And then what happened?”

“He drank some of his coffee and we talked about our daughter, Rosaria. She’s been staying with me since he cut me off.”

“Why?” Detective Werner tapped his pen against the paper.

She shook her head. “Dorian requested it, but did not explain why.”

“Hmm…” He ran a hand through his dark hair. “So, what happened after you talked about your daughter?”

“Dorian...” Violeta’s eyes welled up with new tears. “He grabbed his throat and started choking. His face turned purple. It was like he couldn’t breathe. I screamed for help and ran to get Ivy. But by the time we made it back to the study, he was…”

Her voice trailed off. She covered her mouth with her hands and shook with grief.

Detective Werner’s hardened expression softened. “I know this isn’t easy to talk about, ma’am, but I appreciate your cooperation.
