Petra took a breath and slumped into the chair. Per sipped his coffee. The image of the ice in Qeqertarsuaq slipped away, until the granite spurs sugared with snow were replaced with the beige walls of Perâs consultation room, his office, now ordered with the packing boxes moved to one side and his desk cleared of all but the most essential items. Gone was the pancake ice and crumbling floes from Petraâs memory, and the black sea was restored to the hardwood floor, firm and unyielding beneath their feet.
âHow old were you?â Per asked as he rested the cup of Banjos coffee on the arm of his chair. âFour, did you say?â
âFour or five.â Petra smiled, sipped her coffee.
âFour, not even five-year-olds do that,â Per said.
âThey donât?â
âYou know they donât, Petra.â
âPerhaps not.â
âBut you did.â
âYes.â
It was Perâs turn to smile as Petraâs cheeks flushed with a rush of colour. âIt explains a lot,â he said, gesturing at Petraâs uniform, her utility belt and pistol hanging beneath her jacket on a hook by the door.
âI donât think five-year-olds can shape their destiny by their actions,â Petra said. âAt least, I donât think I did.â
âYouâd be surprised.â Per leaned forward to brush a clump of dust clinging to the sole of his shoe. âItâs like the wild west,â he said, flicking the dust ball onto the floor. âIâve never seen anything like it.â
âItâs worse further north. Itâs muchâ¦â
âDrier?â Per nodded. He smiled, dipped his head to apologise for cutting her off. But then, when he leaned back, when he caught her eye, he was all business. âTell me about the boy.â
Petra sighed and said, âI found him in the stairwell.â
âNot that one,â Per said, reaching for his coffee. âThe other one. The one you pulled out of the sea.â
âAppa?â
âYes.â
âI donât know what to say.â
âI think you do, Petra.â Per shifted his coffee to his left hand so he could cup his chin in his right. âYou formed a bond with him.â
âYes.â
âYour first significant bond with anyone after your parents died.â
Petra nodded. âI suppose I did.â
âYou know you did. And then, yesterday, when you collapsed onto the floor.â Per nodded at a spot on the floor in front of Petraâs chair. âYou said he died.â
âYes.â
âBut before that, before he left youâ¦â
âAlone, again,â Petra said.
âYes. Alone.â Per paused. âAgain.â
The words hung in the air, untouched as they each sipped their coffee, swapping glances in anticipation of Petra telling Per about the boy.
âItâs just a conversation,â he said. âTwo friends talking.â
Petra nodded. âI know,â she said. âItâs justâ¦â
âHe was just like you,â Per said.
âYes.â
âA kindred spirit. A soul mate.â Per waved his hand in lieu of similar descriptions of the bond they shared, until, smiling, he settled on one more. âFellow escape artist.â
âYes,â Petra said, rewarding Per with a smile of her own. âThat too.â
âYou had fun.â
âWe did.â
âYou raised hell.â
âA little,â Petra said. She smiled. âMaybe a lot.â
âImaqa,â Per said, followed by a shrug. âSome Greenlandic I picked up.â
âGreenlandic? I didnât need to pick it up,â Petra said.
