Chapter Fifteen

Javier and I walked into the police station at 8:55 the next morning. Javier had assured me Seeley wanted to ask a few questions and not throw me in a jail cell. Why? He’d made it clear he didn’t want or need my help. Maybe he had changed his tune, but I had my doubts. My chief concern was Stella.

Flint motioned to Cappy’s office. Seeley had made himself at home. He’d brought in a plant and a white coffee mug emblazoned with ‘World’s Best Detective’ in large red letters. I mentally rolled my eyes. As we sat in the most uncomfortable wood chairs ever made, I noticed the office looked cleaner, neater. No more half-inch thick dust on the bookshelves and sills. Seeley shut the door.

“Thank you for coming in. I wanted to speak with you, Charlotte, because of your involvement in the two cases,” Seeley stated.

“I wouldn’t say I’m involved in two cases,” I responded. “It’s one case.”

“Charlie,” Javier started. I held up my hand to quiet him.

“Last I checked, it wasn’t a crime to speak your mind.”

Seeley’s forehead wrinkled. “I see. Charlotte, I’m an experienced investigator for over 25 years. I think I’m a little more qualified to determine how many cases we have. And we have two.”

“Detective Seeley, let’s agree to disagree. It’s one case. I’ve lived in this town my entire adult life and I know its people. Now, what questions did you have?” I sat with my hands folded and waited.

Seeley smiled, a thin, dare I say, condescending smile. “Fine. How well do you know Mona Fitzsimmons?”

“I told you this before. She’s a client. Correction, former client. We are not friends.”

“And Stella Kosloski?”

“Oh, you mean the poor little gal you’ve arrested by mistake? We’re almost family. Her mother died a year or so ago and we’ve become close.”

Seeley nodded as he took notes. “How well did you know Cherry Applebaum?”

“I knew of her, but we’d never met until the fair.”

“I see. So you only knew her through the fair then?”

“That’s what I just said. Why is Stella in custody?” I narrowed my eyes and hoped I looked as irritated as I felt.

“That’s none of your concern”

“Uh-huh. Where’s her lawyer?”

“She hasn’t asked for one.”

“She’s engaged to Officer Flint.”

“Yes, I’m aware. But because she’s engaged to an officer here doesn’t make her above suspicion,” Seeley stated.

“That’s quite obvious since you arrested her.” I had raised my voice. Javier put his hand lightly on my knee.

“Let’s not get too excited, Charlie. Detective Seeley, do you have any further questions for her?” Javier’s grip tightened on my knee.

“Do you have any knowledge of poisons, Charlotte?” Seeley asked.

“They’re poisonous. What are you getting at? Did I poison anyone? No, I didn’t. Neither did Stella. And if you knew what you were doing, you’d know this,” I spat. Javier’s hand still gripped my knee, and I peeled his it away. “Am I under arrest?”

Seeley looked taken aback. “No.”

“Good. Then I’m leaving. Talking to you is useless.” I flung open the office door and stormed out.
