Maynard describes the historical theft and trafficking of Aboriginal bones to natural history museums and private collectors. This trade was supported by a range of shocking practices including grave robbing and the mutilation of Aboriginal bodies, which were often sold off in parts. The fears of being dismembered or taken far away from their homelands after death were amongst the very real threats that many Tasmanian Aboriginal people were forced to live with during their old age. Yet Maynard’s text describes an act of resistance that kept the bones of some Aboriginal women safe.
