“All in all, a resounding success,” I conclude to the rest of the guys as we stand at the gate, watching Anna hug Lissa for what must be the tenth time.

Our castle stands on a barren plateau of rock that stretches perhaps thirty feet in each direction beyond the walls. There might not be much life on this bare rock face, but there was enough room for everyone to open portals as they said their goodbyes.

Now just one portal remains to the Dragonkeep, and none of us can begrudge the sisters taking their time to say farewell. With things what they are, goodbyes seem even more important right now.

“Thanks to you,” Talon murmurs with a big smile, but I can tell how tired he is by the set of his shoulders. “You did very well at managing people.”

I took charge because I’m perhaps best-equipped of any of my mates to handle the delicate political machinations that inevitably unfold over dinner. After all, I grew up a prince in a court of frosty stares and ice-cold silence.

“For a Fae,” Blade adds like it’s obligatory, and I roll my eyes and ignore him.

“Thank you,” I tell Talon. “But I wasn’t the star of the show tonight.”

We all know who was. The five of us turn to look at Anna. She spent the evening winning everyone over. I’ve often admired her beauty and charm, quick wit and wisdom, but everything was on display tonight.

Or almost everything, that is.

We’re all just here to take the burden from Anna’s shoulders, but I can’t help but take pride in how we managed tonight.

Part of that was because I chose the seating assignments carefully. Four of us men sat at the dinner tables to act as hosts, while Anna circulated from table to table after finishing her dinner.

Talon had the most prickly table, including my father, Teraclem from the distant islands, and the head of the City Guards, Tash. It was a risk, but I was right. He can be oblivious, but nobody could be suspicious of our dragon’s motives for long—and he plainly adores Anna.

The only one who got to skip the dinner assignment was Blade, out of respect for Obsidian. The two vampires withdrew from the great hall for a walk and a long conversation about his recent transformation.

That solved one problem and gave me another: they merrily strolled around the castle walkways despite the thunderstorm sitting in the mountains, lashing its wrath against the castle walls.

We may be in our own realm, but knowing Anna, I’m not surprised it remains closely connected to Aviare. She’s shielded the castle to ensure the lightning never comes too close, but it plays around the hills nearby.

The vampires didn’t seem to care a bit, but it stressed Phoenix out for most of the dinner. Even after Blade agreed to come indoors and roam the halls with Obsidian instead, Phoenix remained anxious and fidgety.

Luckily I’d placed myself at the table next to his, knowing I wouldn’t overhear his thoughts.
