Trisha sat next to her and squeezed her knee. “Because, honey, you’re the only one who can handle this.”

Sera growled but didn’t say anything more.

“I can’t believe John signed you up for a fight,” Caressa said, changing the subject.

“I know,” Sera snarled. “I need to speak to him. I can’t believe he did that. What the hell was he thinking?”

“I have no idea,” Trisha said, unzipping the back of her dress, “but whatever the reason, you might wanna prepare for it. These chicks you’ll be fighting are no joke.”

Sera stood and walked to the door. “I’m gonna go talk to John.”

“Well, I’ll probably be asleep when you get back, so I’ll see you tomorrow,” Trisha said, disappearing into the bathroom.

Sera said her goodbyes to Caressa, then walked out into the hallway. She crossed her arms around herself and walked down the stairs to John’s room on the bottom floor. Without even bothering to knock, she entered his room. She found him sitting at a desk, discussing something with Carter in hushed tones. “So… Was your plan to not tell me till the very last second so I couldn’t say no?” she demanded.

John sighed, rubbing his eyes. “I wondered when you’d be down to see me about that.”

“What the hell were you thinking, John? You had no business!”

“Well, I—”

“You put me in a fighting competition? Me, the wolf warrior? Are you friggin’ nuts? I’m trying to keep my identity and the warrior…separate. I don’t need everyone I meet staring at me like I am the devil.”

“Sera, go easy on him,” Carter pleaded.

“John, I mean… Come on!” She growled, pacing the room. “I know you’re a smart guy, but this—”

“I didn’t do it!” he finally screamed, cutting her off.

Stunned and taken aback, Sera looked at them suspiciously. “Uh…explain please.”

“I would never sign you up for a fight without your consent, Sera. I wasn’t the one.”

“Then who was?”

“We don’t know,” Carter growled, “and we can’t undo it either. Apparently, pulling you from the competition is the equivalent of spitting on the challengers’ feet.”

Sera cursed and resumed her pacing, trying to mull it over in her throbbing head. “I’m not fighting, John. I will never fight again.” With that, she turned on the ball of her foot, spinning with a flip of her hair. She stormed out of the room and down the hall, but her angry stomp began to slow when she heard two wolves speaking in hushed tones. She peeked around the corner and saw Clover Dalley conversing with Riley Broy.

“What do you wish me to do with the Moon Shine she-wolf, Alpha?” Clover asked, her raven hair tied back in a tight bun.

“Kill her,” Riley said plainly.

“Kill her? Isn’t that a bit…harsh? What has she ever done to you?”

“Nothing. I’ve never personally met the female. It is her supposed mate I have a problem with.”

“Wait. She has a mate? I did not see any markings on her,” Clover questioned, cocking her head to the side in confusion.

“Aye, the Moon Stone Pack alpha.
