CHAPTER 10

Despite Granny, Mom, and Maui doing everything in their power to wake me, I slept until nearly noon. I was a bit groggy when I woke up, barely remembering the events of the day before until after I showered and downed a cup of strong coffee.

Sifting through my T-shirt drawer, my mood already starting to get the best of me, I settled on a gray T-shirt that read CATS > PEOPLE, and my favorite pair of worn-in jeans with holes in the knees and frayed hems. I took the time to blow dry my hair, but the reality was that I was just stalling.

“Peaches has rung you five times already.” Maui stared up at me from the kitchen counter while I poured myself another cup of steaming hot coffee. Before she left last night, she’d written a note with the name of the hotel Brigid was staying at with instructions to track Brigid down first and then let her know when she should meet us at the Sterling Castle Hotel. I knew Chief Carver would be there regardless. I studied Peaches’ loopy cursive.

“The Blackwood Bay Inn. This isn’t too far from the castle hotel, right? Isn’t this one of Cheris’ places too?”

“They’re all Cheris’ places,” my mom answered.

“Speaking of which, do you plan on confronting her about her little stunt yesterday?” Maui asked.

“Yes, I do.” I took a large sip of my coffee. Great, another uncomfortable encounter I had to look forward to today.

“What are you thinking, anyway? Do think he took off on his own?” my mom asked.

“Well, he didn’t just vanish into thin air.” I let out a deep breath. “I don’t really know how someone could’ve gotten him out without being noticed. So if someone did do something to him, then I think he must’ve left with them by choice. If we go with that line of thinking, then our suspect list is pretty slim. We know he and Raven didn’t get along, but I’m not sure what her motive would be. E.J. either. He seems to have a rivalry with Paulie, which is definitely a strong motive. And April might be a scorned ex-lover. But from what I’ve seen of him, Doug’s a jerk, so there’s a good chance everyone has a motive. We just don’t know what those motives are yet.”

“We’d better go.” Granny paced impatiently near the door.

“Fine.” I chugged the rest of my coffee and grabbed my black zip-up hoodie from the back of a kitchen chair.

“Not making the same ‘inappropriate clothing choice for the weather’ mistake again today, I see.” Maui teased and I shut the door behind me just hard enough to let him know I didn’t appreciate the joke.

The weather wasn’t quite as brutal as it had been the day before, but there was a heavy breeze coming off the bay and I wrapped my arms around me as I hurried along the sidewalk and through the crosswalk.

Blackwood Bay was still busy for a weekday outside of tourist season and I knew the Supernatural Sleuths fans must have still been in town.
