Chapter Seventeen

The next evening Owen insisted on taking our wedding party out to dinner. Since he’d picked the fanciest restaurant in the county, I’d borrowed a dress from Donetta. My wardrobe consisted mainly of sundresses and business suitable attire.

I smoothed down the sleek, blue dress that made the color of my eyes shimmer like a clear blue sky. Ignoring the matching stiletto heels that would give me a nosebleed—either from the height or from falling on my face—I opted for the classic lines of my two-inch grey pumps. No sense triggering rumors of my lack of sobriety by wobbling into the restaurant on high heels.

Jackson stood in the middle of his room pulling on his favorite dinosaur shirt. It was clean, and though it might not be suitable for the restaurant, I wasn’t about to upset him by asking him to change.

Granddaddy, however, was itching for a fight, and Mama was ready to give it to him.

“I ain’t walkin’ into no fancy joint with that walker. Got me a perfectly good cane,” he bellowed loud enough that we heard him upstairs. “If that don’t suit you, Waneta, then I’ll stay home. Don’t need no fancy schmancy food when I got leftovers from the best cook in the county.”

The silence told me his left-handed compliment had taken the wind out of Mama’s sails.

Jackson and I quietly went downstairs, both of us intent on hearing the rest of the conversation. The next voice I heard wasn’t the one I expected.

Blake Harold’s steady voice soothed Granddaddy. “Waneta’s only concerned with your safety, Mr. Winters. I don’t blame you for not wanting to take the walker. The way they cram tables in there, you’d be plowing into someone’s chair for sure.”

Granddaddy chuckled. “My plowing days are over, son.”

Blake laughed at his joke. “Seriously, if you’d rather stay home, I’d be happy to stay with you,” he said. “Waneta’s leftovers sound better than anything they might have on the menu.”

Mama spluttered, “B-but I-I—”

I could see Blake standing with Mama inside the family room. He touched his palm to her face and quietly said, “Let me do this for both of you. As long as you promise to spend some time on the porch swing out back with me when you get home.”

Mama’s face turned red. “I promise.”

Well, you could have blown me over with a whistle. Mama and Blake Harold. I found the prospect of them together didn’t bother me in the least. In fact, I couldn’t have picked a better man for her.

Blake dropped his hand when I cleared my throat. “Sadie,” he began, but was interrupted when Carter and his tide of relatives swept into the house, all talking over each other.

Mona stopped talking and her mouth dropped open when she saw Blake. “Well hello, handsome,” she said, sidling up to him. “This dinner just got very interesting.”

And that explained where Victoria and Owen got their personalities.

Blake stepped closer to Mama and put his arm around her, with his hand on her waist.
