Chapter Seventeen

It was time to write a list to prioritize my jumbled thoughts. Could I squeeze in a visit with Lars before calling my mom and going to my aunt’s? And what about work? That had to remain a priority, yet it was piling up too. Social media engagement was the key to our success, and I had promised myself to stay on top of it. I couldn’t fall behind on only the second day of operations.

Yet as I began to rank tasks in my head, nothing topped finding Bob’s killer. A man had lost his life. Whether I liked him or not, that still came before anything else. And when people I cared about were emerging as suspects, all those important business things felt much less urgent. Realizing this made it crystal clear what I needed to do.

Nate looked up from behind the bar as I approached. Sarah was in the middle of leading a yoga session by the pool, giving me the chance to speak to him without her there.

Nate had the chalkboard down and was in the process of updating the bar specials. “Hey, you, what’s up?”

“We need to talk.”

He put down the chalk and wiped his hands on the bar towel draped over his shoulder. “Should I be worried?”

“Why were you being weird when you found out cameras were installed?”

His face flushed. “Why are you asking?”

“So I can sleep tonight without having nightmares about seeing your wife’s face behind bars.”

He eyes went wide. “Did you inhale too much of Auntie M’s incense again?” He put air quotation marks around the word incense.

My expression flattened. “Just answer me. Apparently, Sarah was seen having some kind of argument with Bob.”

He blew out a loud breath. “Because the guy was checking out her butt and she told him off. What’s your problem?”

No surprise there. “And the cameras? Why did you wig out about them?”

“Not for the outrageous reason you’re thinking. Sarah is a lover, not a killer.” He looked at me with a Know what I mean? look. But I didn’t get it. He dropped his head back. “I was a little tense last night, okay? So, on break, we snuck into the woods and …” He rolled his hand in a gesture suggesting I finish the thought myself.

“Oh! Oh … yup, okay. I get you.” I wrinkled my nose.

“We good now?”

“What time did you … take a stroll?”

“Nine thirty or so.”

A server dropped a tray nearby. Nate grabbed an order chit from the machine behind the bar and poured two glasses of wine. He put them on the tray, and the server left.

I waited until she was out of earshot before asking my next question. “Did you see anyone near the gazebo or the pond?”

Nate smiled sheepishly. “No, but we only had eyes for each other. If you need to know the exact time, check the video feed.”

I huffed out a breath of frustration. “Not possible, thanks to Auntie M.”

He frowned. “What do you mean?”

“She shut the cameras off.
