Ullr touched down near the open-air rink in the center of town. The outdoor market was shuttered for the season but there were still a lot of people milling about the town square, enjoying the crisp evening. A few vendors had year-round carts where they sold treats, and the smell of kettle corn and roasted chestnuts called out to me like a sirenâs song, reminding me that I hadnât had anything other than half a glass of lemonade since that morning before Iâd started my chores. I often forgot to eat while working on the farm, opting for a large breakfast and dinner, with only a handful of snacks throughout the dayâthough I usually ended up sharing those with the reindeer, not always by choice.
Corbin waited for me to dismount before following, then he took Ullrâs reins in one hand and my hand in his other one. âSo, what sounds good? Looks like there are a few options out here, but I think something indoors would be better.â
âAgreed.â As I was considering the nearby restaurants, a flurry of activity caught my eye. The fairies Iâd seen on our way out of town were still performing for a dwindling crowd around the ice rink. âI wonder what thatâs all about,â I commented.
Corbin didnât hear me, his mind was locked in on finding a meal. Not that I could blame him. Based on the rumbling of my own stomach I should focus on the mission, too. Still, it was odd to have such a lengthy impromptu performance. Normally, formal events were advertised around town but I hadnât seen anything about this one.
âHow about Wet Your Wassail?â Corbin suggested with a grin. âWe know that place is now a Jack-free zone.â
I turned my head away from the fairies on the rink and nodded in agreement. âSure.â
Since being kidnapped and stowed away in the pubâs basement, Jack hadnât returned to what was once his favorite haunt in Holiday Haven. I figured heâd eventually return, they served the best lager in town, but for now, we could guarantee he wouldnât pop up to interrupt our meal.
âWhen is the next open mic night?â I asked as we headed over to the pub. âAre you going to play?â
Corbin shrugged. âI donât know. Maybe.â
Grinning, I nudged my arm into his. âYou should. As much as Sugarplum and I have enjoyed our private concerts, it would be fun to see you perform for a real crowd.â
Corbin smiled down at me. âIâll think about it.â
The English-style pub was a quick walk from the center of town, and within a few minutes we were shrugging out of our heavy coats and being shown to a corner booth. The darkened interior made it an ideal place for us to enjoy a meal, away from prying eyes. Most people at the pub were seated around the bar, while the establishmentâs owner, a vampire named Clarence Griswold, held court, slinging drinks and telling jokes.
Corbin handed me a menu and we settled into a familiar discussion of what to order.
