Pearl Hylton came to England from Jamaica just after the war. I interviewed her at her flat in Stockwell, South London. Her daughter Jennifer told me: ‘Mum’s an incredibly brave pioneer. She was so young when she decided to travel to England. Her dad was against it as she was travelling alone, but she was very determined and insisted. She also worked as an extra on a few movies in the 1950s, including So Long at the Fair, with Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogarde.’ LW
