When Virginia woke the next morning, she felt tranquil after sleeping straight through the night, a rarity, then panic when she remembered Marneyâs going out on a date with a murder suspect and being unreachable. She reached for her phone, knocking her alarm clock off the bedside table in the process, and saw that she had a missed call and a voicemail from Lawrence.
âHey, itâs Lawrence. Just calling to let you know I got hold of Marney and sheâs safely back in her cottage after her date with Byron. She forgot her phone when they went out. I hope youâre sleeping soundly and not out with a murderer, seeing as youâre not answering your phone. Talk to you later.â
Virginia frowned at his quip as she returned her phone to the nightstand and stepped into the bathroom. She knew she should be relievedâher best friend was safeâbut she felt embarrassment and a twinge of anger rise up in her. Byron may not have murdered Marney last night, but he was still a suspect for Ruthâs murder in Virginiaâs mind. Genie and Matt were involved, somehow, and for some reason, Genie didnât want Virginia to know about Byronâs motive for killing Ruth.
She brushed her teeth and dabbed rouge onto her cheeks before slipping into a pair of cream-colored slacks and a colorful striped blouse. She decided sheâd call Marney from work and apologize for the barrage of calls the night before and for her behavior over lunch with Byron. If she was going to stand a chance at convincing Marney that this man wasnât Mr. Perfect, she needed to get back on good terms with Marney first.
Work was going smoothly once again. There were no walk-ins, no-shows, or cranky callers taking out their bad mornings on Virginia over the phone, so Virginia was feeling good.
During a gap between patients, Dr. DiMarco walked over and leaned on the reception desk. âI have to say, youâre doing remarkably well.â
Virginia beamed up at him, basking in the compliment.
âI wasnât sure how this was going to go, but since youâve joined me, things are flowing much more smoothly around here. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate having you here.â
Virginia felt like she was floating lightly above the rest of the world as she shuffled into the small coffee nook to brew herself another cup. While the coffee brewed, she gave Marney a call and was surprised when her friend picked up after the second ring.
âSorry I missed all your calls yesterday,â Marney said.
âNo, Iâm sorry I called you a million times.â She paused and breathed into the receiver. âAnd Iâm sorry for interrogating your new beau over lunch. That was⦠I shouldnât have done it.â She waited for Marneyâs response, heart pounding in her chest.
âAn admission of wrongdoing from Virginia Harold Walker? I must be hearing things.â
The two laughed, and Virginia felt a peace settling inside her until Marney asked her to meet for lunch.
âErr, I have plans already,â Virginia lied. âIâm supposed to go over to Dorotheaâs.
