The barn door slid open. I stood up to see who was there. All I could see was the outline of a very tall, skinny man. I curled up in my ball again.

“Uncle Charlie!” Kevin shouted. “Close the door! Lauren let the calves out of their stall!”

I stood up. “I did not let them out! I fell in and they almost trampled me!”

The man, who must have been my Almost-Uncle Charlie, shut the barn door behind him. “What happened?”

I opened my mouth to tell him, but he held up a hand, which meant Stop.

“Never mind. You can tell me later. We need to get these calves back in the stall.”

“But they want to be with their mamas,” I said.

Kevin elbowed me in the ribs. I elbowed him back.

“Lauren!” he shouted.

“Kevin!” I stomped on his foot. It felt good.

A hand grabbed my arm. Another hand grabbed Kevin’s arm.

“Quit it, you two. I need help.” Almost-Uncle Charlie leaned down and looked in my eyes. “I don’t know what happened, but I do know what’s going to happen. You two are going to stop fighting and help me wrangle these calves back where they belong. Kevin, bring me a rope from that wall. Lauren, stand by the door to the stall and get ready to close it when I get them inside.”

I stood behind the stall door and did my square breathing while Almost-Uncle Charlie herded the calves into the stall. As soon as they were all in, Kevin helped me push the door closed.
