Chapter 14: Kyle

I ran through the plan in my head as we climbed the steps to the Lewis household. Hopefully, the other team would find some clue that would send us in the right direction or give us a lead if we’re really lucky. Although, it has felt like every lead we followed had led us to a dead-end or to another set of misleading information. The unknown variables were driving me crazy and leading us on a wild goose chase. I knocked on the door three times before waiting to hear movement in the house. It wasn’t long before I heard footsteps down the hall.

“Coming!” A familiar female voice called. Twenty seconds later, the door was opening to reveal the maid, Janice, in her maid’s uniform. Her smile faded as she took in the presence of Liz and me on the Lewis’s doorstep and a team of uniformed evidence specialists waiting near the van behind us. She crossed her arms over her chest and jutted her chin out like it was supposed to intimidate me.

“What do you want?” she asked, and her tone was cold and aloof. The stark difference between her behavior this time compared to the last time Liz and I had been here to interview Mr. Lewis was off-putting. Last time, she had been so polite, yet this time, she was incredibly rude.

I held a paper up for her to read, and she took it, squinting at the tiny font. “What’s this?” she asked, confused.

“This is a search warrant. We have the court’s permission to search the premises,” I explained, moving to walk past Janice, who still stood in the doorway, blocking my entrance.

“Tanner isn’t here right now. You’ll have to wait until later,” she replied, smugly, crossing her arms over her chest again. My temper flared a bit, but I shoved it back down. What was this lady’s problem?

“Actually, we don’t need the owner’s permission or presence,” I said, trying not to allow my impatience to enter into my tone. “Please step aside.”

Luckily, she stepped back, begrudgingly to allow us and the evidence team to enter. “What am I supposed to do while you tear apart the house?” Janice asked haughtily.

“You need to wait outside,” I ordered, not leaving any room for argument. “Is anyone else in the house? Is Miles here?”

Janice shook her head. “Miles is at school,” she huffed before walking outside without another word.

“Well, isn’t she just a peach?” Liz muttered beside me, and I couldn’t hold back the chuckle that snuck up my throat.

“Right?” I said, shaking my head at the maid’s audacity. We were just doing our job. The maid seemed like one of those people with split personalities who treated those with money and statues with respect and grace, yet as soon as the person was no longer of use to them, she would be quick to stab them in the back. Yet another reason why being this wealthy was never on my agenda. You could never tell the real friends from the fake ones.
