Chapter Fifteen

My mattress shuddered.

“Ike. Get up.”

What fresh hell? I’d told them to leave me alone.

“Come on, you’ve been asleep over twelve hours,” Eddie said.

“What? No, I got up once to pee. What do you want?”

He yanked my blanket away.

“Okay, okay, I’m moving. Get out of the way.” I should sneak away with the barmaid and hide in the Alps.

“My head’s not that great either, man. Jump in the shower and get your senses. It’s too early for breakfast, but I’ll get us coffee.”

“Sounds good.” I headed to the bathroom. “If you put Irish cream in it, I’ll kiss your bald head.”

I stood in the spray for at least ten minutes before stepping out and drying. I hadn’t paid attention to the puddle left from Eddie’s earlier shower. My clean clothes drenched, I snuck out to the bedroom and rummaged through my suitcase.

Eddie flung open the door. “Oh, come on, man, I don’t want to see that bent-over ass.” He threw a pillow at me.

“Sorry, but someone left water everywhere in the bathroom.”

“Drink your coffee. Angie is sleeping…I guess.”

I dressed right away, sipped the coffee, then gazed out our frosty-paned window seeing several inches of snow had fallen, but the efficient plows had cleared the streets. “I guess we dress warmly today. Now, what’s on the agenda for two more days? Sitting and talking?”

“Ease up, Ike. We are tourists today, and Angie wants to visit a few old churches.”

“I can’t do it.”

“Look, I don’t enjoy being kept in the dark either, but Angie is Angie. She knows what she’s doing.”

“Really?”

“Faith, my friend. Ask yourself a question. Would you have told the world about a spouse’s betrayals, especially after his or her death?”

“I’m not as worried about that, Eddie, as I am the whole Kastrati sidebar. Who is he for real? And Manny?” Light steps trudged down the hallway across its creaking wood-planked floors.

Eddie jumped to his feet and pulled a gun from his belt. “Be quiet.” He opened the door a few inches and hid the old-style revolver behind him. Another door slammed, and Eddie returned the slam with ours. “Damn, I’m as jumpy as a kangaroo. The housekeeper was getting her stuff out of the closet.”

“Uh, where did you get the long-barreled revolver? It looks like something from an old western.”

“Yeah, it’s cool, huh?” He blew the barrel as if he had shot something and chuckled. “Call me Sheriff Bart.”

“Who?”

“Sheriff Bart. The sheriff in Blazing Saddles…oh, never mind. Angie gave me the gun.”

“She carries around spare revolvers?”

“I’m sure it’s from the proper sources. And you’ll get what she gives you, so don’t get all huffy again. I get it, man, you feel Angie’s misled us, manipulated us, or whatever. But how do you think I feel? Angie and I have known each other for thirty years, and I keep getting these new pieces of info she’s stashed away for who knows how long.”

“Like I said yesterday, if we can stay on track to find enough information about Jack Marconi’s murder, and even solve it, I’ll be happy.
