Evergreen was everything The Basement was not.

It was still a music venue, like the last place, but it was classier in a lot of ways. While there was a large area for general admission guests to fill in right in front of the stage, there were also a few tables set up around the edge of the space. A balcony with seats also hung over the space, spreading out the bodies so it didn’t feel so crowded.

Instead of the black paint that covered every surface at The Basement—and seemed to hide a myriad of sins—the floor at Evergreen was a polished concrete. The walls were a shiny mosaic of subway tiles, and the chandeliers hanging by the bar reflected off the tiles, creating a cascading sparkle everywhere I looked. I had to remind myself to pull my attention from the beautiful decorations so I could watch Hope’s reaction to the venue, look for any signs that she recognized the place.

We stepped inside, pulled forward by the music spilling out through the open front doors. Hope’s eyes narrowed in what looked like recognition. On the large stage, a sound crew tested instruments as prerecorded music blared through the speakers and the crowd mingled.

We’d missed Electric Skunk.

“They’re over there,” Cole said, showing up by my side. He pointed to a table set up near the side of the room where four guys sat in front of merchandise.

I smiled, relieved they hadn’t left. But my smile slid from my face as I turned to Hope. She was staring straight at Cole, her expression tight with worry. She’d heard the last thing he’d said.

“Is that them over there?” I asked, gesturing to the table, trying to distract her.

Hope blinked, moving her attention from Cole to the band. She nodded. “Yeah, that’s them. I recognize those guys. I think I recognize this place too.” But even though her words were confident, her face remained pinched and puzzled.

As much as I wanted to celebrate her ability to recall something, it didn’t feel like the time, especially with how confused she looked. Worry rose inside me. I didn’t dare look over at Cole, but I could almost feel him wince with realization at his mistake. Unable to change what had happened, I walked toward Electric Skunk. Years of therapy had taught me that just because I ignored something didn’t make it disappear, but I didn’t know what else to do in the moment.

Hope and I stopped in front of the table, waiting for a trio of women to finish chatting up the band. From the way the women were giggling, touching their necks, and flinging their hair about, it was pretty easy to see they were interested in the guys.

The band, however, looked like they couldn’t care less about the tight dresses and short skirts in front of them. They glanced at their phones, and one guy even yawned. Only the man sitting at the far end of the table engaged the women in conversation.

A red-haired member of the groupie group glanced over her shoulder and noticed us.
