BRENDAN

When Sloan texts that he and Emmet are busy for a bit, Nightfall and I take the bike and head out to the ruins on our own. The mid-morning sun offers an amazing backdrop for another perfect day as we backtrack our route to return the skull and other remains.

I’m relatively sure it was the thunderstag elder’s magic that stopped us at the amphitheater. Given that we’re returning the bones of both thunderstag youths, I hope we won’t be stranded.

At the time, I thought we were supposed to find the skull and use it in our battle to fight off the enemy.

Now I know better.

Still, after learning the true nature of the remains, I’m happy we reunited the couple so they and the elder can finally be at rest.

When I stop my bike in the same spot where we broke down two days ago, I feel pretty good about the whole thing.

Once Nightfall dismounts, I climb off and unstrap the black duffle from where I tethered it to the back of my bike.

“Are you okay, beautiful?” I hold out my hand as we leave my bike parked on the trail and descend the overgrown steps toward the stage below.

“I am well enough.”

The way she says it, I don’t believe her. “How about we try that again, and you tell me the truth this time?”

She sighs and frowns at the bag I’m carrying. “If you have another vision and can convey our regrets, please do. I feel terrible that the bones were disturbed.”

I lay my arm across her shoulders and kiss her head. “I’ll do that, but I think the result conveys our intentions pretty well, so don’t worry.”

With not even forty-eight hours since the last time we were here, nothing has changed.

The amphitheater is still overgrown.

The columns are still crumbling and toppled over.

The soil is still churned up where I found the skull.

“Where do you think we should bury them this time to ensure they don’t get disturbed again?”

Nightfall straightens and slides an assessing gaze over the landscape. “I shall find the perfect place.”

“Sounds like a plan.” When she strikes off, I set the bag on the remnants of a stone bench and pull the zipper. The bones lay inside, still glowing, next to a small camping spade I brought to speed up the process.

“What about here?” Nightfall calls, waving me over to a flat expanse of grass where I imagine a stage sat centuries before. “What do you think?”

I look around. It’s in an open area that is clear of the crumbling stone and still quite close to the male’s original resting place. “I think it’s quiet and far enough from the decay of the columns. They should remain undisturbed.”

That must have been exactly the right answer because the smile she rewards me with is radiant and filled with approval.

Yay, me. Winning.

I grab the bag and set it on what would have been the ancient altar stone in the center of the stage. With the camping spade in hand, I get to work on digging the hole.
