CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The next morning, Scarlett and Runeclaw visited a local diner for breakfast. It involved her throwing pieces of a donut across the booth at him and laughing like mad at his efforts to catch it. Then they located an alley where she could open a portal without being noticed.

The rift in space took them to the paved lot outside a vehicle garage in Rachel, Nevada. As always, laughter, people shouting, and a general air of camaraderie came from inside the garage.

The Spell Riders, a motorcycle club made up of male magicals, mainly wizards, owned the place. It reflected their style. The exterior looked mostly normal, but arcane symbols interspersed with equipment logos covered the inside walls.

A couple of cars were up on lifts, and several motorcycles were parked seemingly at random in the space. Scarlett knew the arrangement was completely intentional and they were within certain areas that would either enhance or nullify magic so the mechanics could do their work.

Runeclaw observed, “This is a good place. A rock that offers calm waters in the raging stream of life.”

Scarlett snorted. “Very philosophical this morning, are we?”

“Those of us with excess brainpower have to do something with it. You wouldn’t understand.”

“Ouch. Sick burn.”

A shout from the garage interrupted their conversation. “Look out, boys, it’s a Witch on Wheels.” Maddox wiped his hands on a rag as he walked toward her.

Scarlett ran up and wrapped the older man in a hug.

He laughed as he patted her on the back. “Always good to see you, Scarlett.” Runeclaw rubbed against his leg, and he added, “And you too, Guardian.”

Runeclaw leapt to Scarlett’s shoulder and accepted a pat on the head from Maddox. Scarlett replied, “It’s always wonderful to see you, too. I still owe you, by the way. I haven’t forgotten.”

He waved a hand. “Forget it.”

She grinned. “No matter how often you tell me that, I’m still not going to do it. I’ll get it back to you eventually.”

He shrugged. “Whatever.” He gestured at the garage. “Business is good. I’m not in any particular need.”

“I am, but not of money. Well, always of money, but not only money at the moment.”

Maddox laughed. “Come inside.” He led her across the garage into a small office she’d never been inside. A vending machine that would have looked old a century before stood against the wall. He pressed one of the buttons and a can popped out of the bottom. He handed it to her, and she sighed with pleasure as she popped the tab on the root beer and took a long drink.

He retrieved another for himself and sat in the chair behind the desk. She took the one across from him. “So, what can we do for you?”

“We have more Redthorn trouble.”

Maddox straightened. He and the Spell Riders had been part of their attack on the Redthorn excavation site in Moab, and he had every reason to dislike the organization. “What are the bastards up to now?”

She explained the anti-magical atmosphere in Provo, which she thought might be connected to Redthorn.
