Seb’s brow remained knitted in the deepest frown, the same way it had been since Sam returned last night. Now the one-armed Dan person had been extinguished by someone other than him, getting the lowdown as to where his fucking money was and who the man had been working with or for, was gone.

Seb’s skin bristled. He’d been counting on getting his hands on the twat and now some fucker had pipped him to the post by removing the cunt from the planet.

He hadn’t thought things could get any worse, but it looked like he’d got that wrong as well.

All night, he’d desperately tried to justify Sam’s unexpected decision, but he still didn’t understand it. Couldn’t understand it. It bordered on treachery, and he resented feeling even the hint of that negative emotion about the woman he loved.

‘I know none of you like it, but what else could I do?’ Sam cried, looking around the faces in her office. ‘Tina supplied information to get you off the hook, Seb. None of us expected her to find that on her return home, did we?’

‘But giving the girlfriend of the bastard who robbed us a room here, as well as a job?’ Andrew barked, his tone less than friendly. He glanced up at the ceiling, where two floors above, several small flats were used for people to stay. ‘It’s insane and it’s also not on.’

‘We don’t know for certain whether Tina knew anything!’ Sam countered. ‘From all reports, she only hooked up with that man the other day.’

‘Yeah, but she knew him from the Aurora, we know that much, so it stands to reason she had to be aware of the robbery,’ Seb grumbled. ‘I’m not happy, Sam.’

Sam folded her arms. ‘After seeing the guy she was with lying dead in her hallway, convinced she’d be next, I wasn’t leaving the girl alone, the state she was in. Tina did us a huge favour and I can’t help but think her boyfriend’s death was in retribution for that.’ Acknowledging that Tina speaking to the police might have caused this, was uncomfortable.

But it was true.

Andrew raised an eyebrow. ‘You think it was Bedworth?’

‘I don’t know.’ Sam bit down on her lip. ‘I don’t see how he could have got wind of what she’d done so quickly, but neither can I think of another alternative.’ And no, she didn’t like that the body of the man she’d asked Craig and Daz to remove last night had been immediately recognised to be the very same one-handed bloke pulled up in her own club for card sharking not long ago either.

Seb was right that it must be the man who Simon Parker released the codes of the safe to, but what she really didn’t want to admit to Seb or anyone was worse…

Sam knew Tina was aware of the robbery because the girl had blurted it out as she’d been shepherded upstairs during the clean-up operation. She’d sobbed – beside herself with guilt for not saying anything beforehand and apologising for being dishonest to someone who had been so kind.
