Warren Laing, in his Sandy Craddock persona, woke from his post-lunch snooze to find a visitor sitting by his bed. She was another attractive young woman, with windblown fair hair, a snub nose and large wire-rimmed glasses.

‘Hello, Sandy,’ she greeted him. ‘Everyone at work sends their regards and best wishes. We’ve done you a monster card, and half the clients wanted to put their names on it too.’

That settled who she must be: one of Hennigan’s staff. He watched her prop the envelope against his water jug. ‘You’d better open it for me. I’m a bit short of hands at the moment.’

‘So is Charlie. That’s what’s bothering him. He’s moaning to have you back as soon as you’re well enough. Which might cue a demand for a rise, don’t you think?’

She plucked the envelope back and began to tear the flap off. ‘Did I ever,’ Laing asked, ‘tell you how pretty you are?’

‘Good God, no!’ She looked startled. She regarded the bandaging on his head, wondering if there was brain damage.

‘What’s the matter?’ he demanded.

‘Nothing really. I was just wondering – why you’d dyed your hair.’

‘My hair?’ He ran his free hand across the little tufts left unshaved above his ears. ‘Oh, that. Vanity, I suppose.’

She gave him a direct stare. ‘Well, that’s a first, if you like!’
