That evening, Tamara, Oona, and Emily joined Lilith at her place for some Chinese food and just to hang out. The other women were great to hang out with, but once in a while, it was nice to just have the four of them together, like old times.
âHow is your murder investigation going?â Oona asked. âI kind of miss doing the investigations with you. That was a lot of fun.â
âIt was fun to have you as my partner in crime,â Lilith said. âRight now, though, you would have a hard time waddling out of trouble if it came up.â
âTrue. The baby is getting very big,â Oona said. âPlus, I wouldnât be very stealthy. I dropped a piece of mail on the floor and it took me about twenty minutes just to kneel down and stand back up. Iâm like a pregnant penguin on ice.â
Everyone laughed at the imagery that Oona created.
âOne of the many hidden joys of pregnancy,â Lilith said. âSpeaking of which, I brought your fried pickles to go with the Chinese food.â
âFried pickles?â Emily asked. âThat sounds completely disgusting.â
âI thought so too, until about a month ago. However, the baby seems to have acquired a taste for them,â Oona said.
Emily made a face and then said, âI will have to teach the baby a thing or two after he or she shows up. When are you going to tell us the gender?â
âPlease donât get the baby hooked on salted caramel lattes like you did the cats,â Oona said. âWeâve decided to wait for the baby to be born before we know the gender. We have names picked out either way, so we will be happy, as long as the baby is healthy.â
âI noticed that the nursery is all neutral colors and everything on the baby registry is neutral,â Tamara said.
âSo back to my question, how is the investigation going?â Oona asked.
âFrustrating. The narrative for Julia is that no one liked her and practically everyone had a reason to be happy that she was dead,â Lilith said.
âAnd for Aaron?â Tamara asked.
âEveryone loved him and no one had a reason to want him dead,â Lilith said.
âThereâs a connection somewhere,â Emily said. âThey had a common enemy.â
âYou are right,â Lilith said. âThe question is, who? Josiah and I did manage to eliminate one of the suspects. The problem is that there are so many left.â
âYouâll figure it out,â Oona said. âOof.â
âWhy oof?â Lilith asked, alarmed.
Oona lifted up her shirt just a little bit. The women watched in fascination as tiny feet seemed to walk across the inside of Oonaâs belly. Then, one of the feet pulled back and then kicked hard.
âHeâs going to be a soccer player,â Lilith said.
âTell me about it,â Oona said. âIâm getting all beat up from the inside out.â
The women spent the rest of the evening relaxing and just talking, with the cats making their comments every now and then. Lilith was happy. For just a few hours, it was just like old times, before murder first entered Lilithâs life when she found the body of a murder victim on the side of Cowboy Mountain.
