Josiah stopped by Waysilver the next morning with the appropriate treats for everyone.

“I know that I’ve been a little crazy lately,” he told Lilith. “I promise that it has nothing to do with our relationship or my feelings for you. There has been some crazy stuff going on in my family. It has me running in circles. As soon as I get everything sorted out, I’ll explain things to you. I wouldn’t even know where to start right now.”

Lilith smiled at him. She wished that he would trust her with what was going on, but at least he did make this effort to reach out to her. He was just about to say something else when Paul came into the shop.

“I saw your truck outside,” he told Josiah.

“Is that your new ride?” he asked Lilith.

Lilith smiled widely and nodded.

“Yes, it is. Emily picked it out for me,” Lilith said.

“How long is this one going to last?” Paul asked.

“Why does everyone keep asking me that question?” Lilith fussed.

“Um, probably because you don’t really have a great track record with your previous vehicles,” Paul said. “Rams are tough, so this one might stand a chance.”

“I tried to talk her into getting a charger so she could just outrun the bad guys, but she said it wouldn’t work. I guess she was right, since she was sitting still both times she was ambushed in her cars,” Emily said.

“Ouch. Harsh truth,” Josiah laughed.

“Out of the mouths of babes,” Paul said.

Then, he said, “I was in town so I decided to stop by and give you a little bit of information I discovered. I don’t know if it is related to the murder, but every little bit helps, right?”

“That’s right. What do you know?” Josiah asked.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on Mountain Rat’s shed since he’s been murdered,” Paul said. “Plus, I wanted to look inside of his freezer again. His generator is still going, and I know that he had some poached bear meat a few months ago. I was just wondering if he had anything else I should know about in there. His generator is likely to run out of gas soon, so I would draw up a warrant to confiscate the illegal meat. It shouldn’t go to waste. It can be processed and given to the animal shelter or whomever might need it.”

That made sense to Lilith. Mountain Rat couldn’t be punished for his crimes, but some good might come of it.

“His freezer was cleaned out, so someone already had the idea of having some free food. The other thing that I noticed was that a small propane heater he had in the corner of his shack was missing,” Paul reported. “I don’t know if it means anything, but I figured I’d tell you anyway.”

“We appreciate the information,” Josiah said. “Regarding your alibi…”

Paul smiled and shook his head and replied, “I really don’t want to talk about it. If, at the end of your investigation, you have no other suspects who could have possibly killed that man and you think that I did it, I will tell you my alibi.
