Keep in mind these were Trooper Reynolds’ stomping grounds. I had driven this highway only once, years before, on a deer hunting trip. As I approached Beowawe, I lost sight of the violator as the vehicle disappeared around a curve. I arrived at the curve at over seventy miles per hour when Trooper Reynolds said over the radio, “Watch out for the railroad tracks.”

Before finishing his sentence, my patrol car launched over a pair of tracks with an elevated crossing. I thought my Mustang would never come down. I landed at the tail end of a left curve. My pony hit hard, but I managed keep it upright and on the road. I thanked Trooper Reynolds for his warning, only wishing he would have shared that tip a bit sooner.

I caught up to the vehicle soon after the pavement turned to dirt. This remote part of our state is known as the Crescent Valley. The Cortez Mountains border the east side of the valley and are home to the Cortez Gold Mine. The woman turned left onto the road that dead-ended at the mine. Dispatch contacted the local deputy who had two of the gold mine’s giant front-end loaders block the road.

Out of options, the woman made a sharp left turn to miss the loaders and drove on into the sagebrush. She lost control of the vehicle which slid broadside and became stuck in the sand. Trooper Reynolds and I approached the vehicle with caution. After determining that the woman had no weapons, we tried to speak to her. The woman didn’t move, speak, or open her eyes. Her vitals appeared normal and she had no apparent injuries. We removed her from the car and laid her onto a blanket. It seemed that she had suffered some kind of a mental breakdown.
