Crystal and I enjoyed many more trips after that. Some were day trips that took us to neighboring towns and villages where weâd shop a little, eat a little, and sometimes drink a little. Other times weâd take the train, explore, and stay the night. I was learning to like the taste of beer and wine. I knew my momma wouldnât approve, but it was an easy way to dull the sadness I sometimes felt. I enjoyed my job, and Crystal couldnât be any nicer, but I felt like something was missing from my life, and alcohol seemed to make this feeling vanish. Everything seemed a little bit funnier, a little less serious, and time seemed to stop after a few swigs of cold frothy beer or sips of fine German wine.
Crystal and I noticed we were getting a bit pudgy around the middle and contributed it to the beer, wine, and all of the good food we were indulging in. She suggested we take up volksmarching, a form of non-competitive fitness walking. The trails were usually ten kilometers or just over six miles long, and at the end, we were given a pin or patch for our accomplishment. If the patches or pins werenât incentive enough, the beer and food tents were! We justified our eating and drinking as an earned reward for our efforts.
âI donât know if this is helping to trim our waistline, Jessica.â
âAt least itâs getting us moving,â I interjected, hoping it didnât sound too much like a cop-out.
It was true; it got us out, and the cost was minimal except for the food and drink we purchased. We both agreed weâd skip the beer on our next walk. Slowly weâd get into shape. Neither of us was trying to impress anyone, but we also knew that keeping our weight down was the best way to live a long, healthy life. Besides, the service didnât want a bunch of overweight special agents, no matter what department they were in.
