Chapter Eleven

Unraveling Truths

“Tell me why, Bond?” Images of him in the ring bounced around in my head. I dug and dug for clues but deep in my gut I knew the truth. My instincts, that I had ignored earlier, ripped through me, and I couldn’t admit to myself that Bond might have killed the Commissioner.

He didn’t respond but turned from me, staring blankly toward the line of empty shower stalls. The moment felt so stretched, I sunk beneath the darkness of my thoughts.

I reached out for him, grasped for his arm but he pulled away from me. “Go away, Mor. Leave this place. It’s not for someone like you.”

There was something behind those angry words, something painful. I watched him, his curled posture, the fisted hands.

Fire raged inside me to have him push me aside, to know he’d been holding onto this secret alone for so long.

“You think I’m weak? You think I can’t handle a pit of monsters? Because that’s all you were out there. A monster,” I cried out, fury threading behind my voice.

He jerked around to face me, and I saw it.... The pain in his eyes like it had been there a lifetime, trapped and drowning him. But I saw so much more. Love. How much he cared.

His arms shook by his side, and my heart turned jagged. He stood before me, naked from the waist up, his chest glistening with sweat, bloody and bruised from the fight, muscles flexing, but he was vulnerable. Still, he held back the truth, concealed it with layers of the wall he’d built to hide behind.

“Please, Bond, let me in because it’s killing me to see you like this.”

His brow furrowed and he lowered his head, shadows concealing his expression as he shook his head. If he had any tears left, he’d be crying.

“I read somewhere that only warriors choose their battles. This is my fight, so let me do what I need,” he growled. Once again, he turned from me, leaving me behind.

“This isn’t just your fight.” I strode forward, grabbed his wrist, and swung him around. “Tell me why? Why are you doing this?”

He shuddered and quaked under my touch, and when he met my gaze, the hurt creased the corners of his eyes. “Because someone perfect like you shouldn’t be tainted by a place like this. Because you’re right. There are monsters… and I’m the worst one.”

“That’s not true.” I squeezed his arm.

“I can’t offer you the brightness you deserve, Mor, can’t you see that? I’ve done things… things that I hate. Every night I go to sleep and see myself lowered in my grave. I wake up with a scream on my throat. I’m too far gone and you’re better off without me.” He ripped his hand from mine.

Scared.

He looked so close to breaking… on the edge, needing any excuse to fall. I chased after him, refusing to let go.

His hand curled around my fingers softly, and the first threads of hope appeared like a tiny flicker of light in his eyes.
