Chapter Eleven
Margie was dragging her feet, but she started to recognize some of the landmarks that showed she was at or near the murder scene. She couldnât remember enough to locate it precisely. It was a lot steeper than she remembered. She wandered off of the path, looking down at the ground for some sign of where Smithâs body had been. The vegetation should be crushedâif not by his body, then by the various law enforcement officers and techs gathering forensic evidence and the vehicles that had been parked nearby. There would be some sign that they had been there.
Margie walked back to the trail, went a little farther, and veered off again. It felt closer. But she still wasnât sure.
As she looked around for some sign of where the vehicles had been parked and the yellow tape tied, she suddenly felt as if she were being watched. She stopped and listened. There was no sound of anything but the birds singing and the wind in the trees.
A twig snapped off in the distance somewhere.
An animal? Someone watching her? Someone exploring on their own?
Was someone else looking for the murder scene? Maybe the killer realized he had dropped something? Or was there a treasure he had been afraid David Smith was going to discover first?
She looked around, trying to pick out a figure in the trees. She couldnât see anyone, but couldnât shake the feeling that she was not alone. Why had Smith been killed there? Was there any significance to the place? Or was it just by chance? A random stranger? As much as she had emphasized to Cathy Lin that most murderers were not random crazies, there were a few. Every now and then, it did happen.
Another twig snapped, from a different direction this time. Margie turned slowly, aware of her peripheral vision, paying attention to whether someone was trailing or flanking her, trying to avoid being seen.
âExcuse me! Youâre supposed to stay on the pathways!â
The loud male voice made her jump, and Margie whirled around to confront the speaker. For a split-second, she was afraid. The man was closer than she had expected. Big, well-built, not someone whom she was going to be able to beat easily in a physical confrontation, if it came to that. But within a couple of seconds, she recognized him as the RCMP officer who was involved in the investigation.
âConstable Shack.â
âDetective Pat.â He rolled his eyes and blew out his breath. âItâs you. Iâm sorry, I didnât recognize you when your back was to me. Figured you were some curiosity-seeker, or maybe our doer, returned to the scene of the crime.â
Margie wasnât sure whether she should be insulted that he had identified her as a potential suspect. But there was nothing to say that the killer hadnât been a woman. A sharp blade skillfully handled didnât require the upper body strength of a man to be effective. She wondered whether there was anything in her mailbox from the medical examinerâs office yet. They should have had the time to do the postmortemâat least the preliminary results.
