It took her the rest of the afternoon to sort things out with her chain of command. Her boss was livid, his boss was worse, and she didn’t even want to think what the district attorney would say when he heard about it. She could see the massive dollar signs from the civil suit that was almost certainly coming, but it wasn’t the government’s lost money digging the burning pit in Mack’s stomach. She prided herself on her record—kept a binder full of minute entries documenting her trial wins—but she prided herself more on her well-earned reputation as an ethical prosecutor.

On her very first day at the Tucson District Attorney’s Office, Mack had been handed three things: a badge, an ID, and a laminated note card with a quote from the Supreme Court case Berger v. United States: “[The prosecutor] is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all; and whose interest, therefore, in a criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done…[W]hile he may strike hard blows, he is not at liberty to strike foul ones. It is as much his duty to refrain from improper methods calculated to produce a wrongful conviction as it is to use every legitimate means to bring about a just one.”

She had carried that card in her wallet ever since, and she was proud to strike hard blows without striking foul ones.
