CHAPTER TWELVE
“There’s no way it’s her,” Charlie says as we dash to catch the dreaded ferry back to Murabad. “Delilah might be many things, but she’s not a murderer. I know her.”
“Unfortunately,” I snip, annoyed he’s immediately leapt to her defence.
Ignoring my little jibe, he continues, “Why would she risk her career, her whole lifestyle to do away with a yoga teacher who accidentally caused her an injury? It’s not worth ruining your reputation and spending the rest of your life in prison for. It’s crazy.”
“It’s a motive. Plus, she’s staying at the resort, which gives her ample opportunity,” I bat back as we clamber aboard the ferry which is already bobbing about on the waves alarmingly. I stifle a wave of nausea as I find a seat at the back of the boat and silently pray for the moment when I get back on dry land on Murabad. “And I wasn’t aware she had a reputation worth protecting. Does being an arrogant, self-absorbed cow count?”
Charlie shakes his head at my comment and looks out to sea.
We don’t speak for the rest of the journey. The English couple sitting to my right notice my accent and start asking what I’m doing on the islands, how long I’ve been here, and whether Charlie and I are on honeymoon in one of the resorts or not. I’m grateful for the distraction as it thankfully keeps my mind off the waves, wind and frequent bouts of nausea.
At last we are safely back on dry land near the Five Palms.
“Where to next?” I ask as we march up the beach.
Charlie stops in front of me and spins round. “I suppose you want to seek out some evidence to hand over to the police on Delilah?”
Hands on hips, I glare at him. “Why are you defending her?” I demand.
“Why are you gunning for her?” he snaps back.
“Because she’s here, she had motive and she had opportunity.”
“That’s not really why,” he says, “and we both know it. You’ve got it in for her after that rubbish out in LA, pretending Delilah and I were involved to pull out her stalker. That, is what this is really about.”
Okay, it might be about that just a tad, but the rest of the stuff still stands true on the motive and opportunity. I’m not about to admit as much to Charlie though.
“What did you learn in boot camp, Amber?” he asks.
I frown. “Lots of stuff, why?”
“I’m sure somewhere in the notes you made, and the agency manual you were given it will say that an agent has to remain impartial at all times. An agent doesn’t decide to get someone hauled up on murder charges because they hate them. That would be unprofessional.”
He’s right. It does say that. I remember it. I just conveniently forgot about it for a while. Hang on a minute... “Wouldn’t it also be unprofessional though to assume somebody is innocent just because you think you know them?” I counter.
“It would be,” he agrees with a smile.
