Chapter Nine

Danny heard a knock on his door. Knowing no killer–stalker would knock on the door, he walked over to it with his gun in hand because his training had taught him to be cautious in situations like this. He visibly relaxed after looking through the peephole and seeing T. J. standing on the other side of the door.

“Hey, man, sorry about before. I didn’t know you and Kelly were . . . well, you know,” Danny said blushing as he talked.

“We weren’t doing anything, Dan.”

“Looked like something to me, and who could blame you. She is a fine-looking chick.”

“It was just a kiss. She slept in my bed. She felt safer there, and it just happened. And why am I explaining to you anyway?” T. J. said with frustration. He wished he could understand what was going on himself and trying to explain it to someone else was just as bad.

Danny held up his hands in defense. “I don’t know, T-man, you just are. Maybe you feel like you have to. Let me ask you question, is this a first kiss or has it happened before?”

Danny took T. J.’s nonresponse as an affirmative to the question and continued. “T-man, far be it for me to say, but Kelly is in a fragile place, and things could get complicated.”

”Don’t you think I know that?” T. J. snapped.

“All I’m saying is she doesn’t seem to be the type that just fools around for kicks. Remember that, okay, buddy?”

“I’m going to go get things arranged for our trip. Keep an eye on her,” was T. J.’s only response.

T. J. strode out the door, and Danny went over to the phone and ordered breakfast for two. He decided to play devil’s advocate to see just how far T. J. was into Kelly. It would be very interesting to watch it play out.

Danny knocked on Kelly’s door, and when she opened it, he pushed a cart in with the smell of steaming coffee coming from a pot.

“Is this some kind of conspiracy?” Kelly asked with resignation.

“Is what a conspiracy?” Danny asked.

“I’m trying to quit coffee, but since this mess started, someone is always tempting me with it.”

“Oh, yeah, you did say that the first night after you saw . . . well, after what you saw. I could call down and get you some juice.”

“No, it’s okay. I smelled it. I’ve got to have it now.”

Danny read the front of her T-shirt. “Smack your ass, huh?”

“I practice what I preach,” she teased. “One of the few things the idiot didn’t destroy. I guess he missed this one.”

“I could oblige if you want,” he said jokingly

Kelly laughed as she opened one of the covers to find a steaming omelet. “No thank you. You keep those big paws off my tush.”

“Aw, man, no fair.”

The banter continued throughout the omelets and the three cups of coffee Kelly drank. She convinced Danny that the Monday morning blues could be erased by Monday morning cartoons. As they sat on the floor, he watched her laugh uproariously at some silly antic by an animated character.
