Defining the mid-ground rocks.

Step 11: Carefully remove all the masking fluid using the Maskaway eraser, but only after checking that the painting is completely dry. With a No. 8 sable and using mixtures of burnt sienna with ultramarine blue, transparent oxide brown and ultramarine blue, develop the stones in the mid-ground. Make sure that the shadows on the stones are consistent with the direction that the light is coming from. Allow to dry fully.

Adding small sparkles.

Step 12: In a separate palette or on an old saucer add a little water to some white gouache – just enough water to be able to paint with (too much water will thin the mix and reduce the paint’s opacity). Using a No. 4 pointed sable paint in a few small sparkles and ripples below the cascade. Add a little Winsor blue to the white gouache and paint in a few ripples in the foreground pool.
