Hank opened the door. “You okay? Why are you here? Is it Ruby?”

I held my hands in the air to stave off more questions. “No, no. She’s fine. Why would I come here to tell you when I can just call you?”

He shrugged.

“Sorry. I should have called first. She’s okay. She should be on her way home now.”

His shoulders fell back down to a normal position, relief written all over his face. “Oh, good. Okay, then, a pleasure to see you. What can I do for you?”

I glanced over at his long-time receptionist, Michelle Ainsley. “Hi, Michelle. Sorry to barge in like this.”

She shrugged. “After sixteen years here, I’m used to it. No big deal.” She looked at Hank. “That was your last client for the day. Do you need anything else?”

He looked from me to her. “No, that’s okay. It’s just Mercy. Have a good night. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He moved out of his office doorway. “Give me a few minutes.”

I nodded. “Oh, sure, no problem. I’ll wait.”

After he closed his door, Michelle explained, “He has to record his notes. It’s been a long day. No time to breathe.” She cleared her desk. “I haven’t seen you since… your…” She made a humming sound. “I don’t know what to call it.”

“Disaster comes to mind,” I joked. “It’s okay. I know what you mean.”

She laughed. “At least you aren’t bitter.” She pulled barrettes out of her hair, letting her silky smooth silver locks fall down her back. When she noticed me watching, she said, “I got tired of paying someone to cover up the gray. I figured why not save the money for something fun, like shoes.” She walked around her desk to show off a pair of what could only be called Studio 54 style stilettos. “What do you think? Aren’t they lethal?”

“You could kill someone with them for sure,” I joked.

She walked back to the other side of her desk. “Speaking of kill, I’m so sorry about what happened. I can’t believe Guido is gone. He’s been a fixture in this community for such a long time. His whole family has, even the new Mrs. Teoloni. We were all so happy when they fell in love, and it happened so fast too. I wonder what she’ll do without him.”

“I didn’t realize she was the new wife,” I said. That’s the first I’d heard of it. “I must have missed that memo. I don’t know much about him. Margie introduced us. I guess, I never had much need for a tailor in my life. I buy off the rack.”

She chuckled. “Nothing wrong with that. When I was still married, everything I bought was from one of the big box stores. If we couldn’t get it at the everything store, we couldn’t get it. I’m so glad that marriage went south. I mean, I love the Teolonis, but to tell you the truth, Freddy and I shouldn’t have married in the first place.”

Hank opened his office door. “Sorry about that.
