Chapter 19 - Just the Facts, Ma’am

Tamsin’s hand tingled. She’d spent years building up walls and teaching herself how to survive without the touch she craved. Something about Paige destroyed all her good intentions. And then the damn woman kissed her…and what a kiss!

Maybe spending a week with Paige will fill a need I’ve had and then I can go back to Chicago balanced. Even to herself she sounded delusional.

They reached the corner of the block with the police department. Tamsin stopped Paige. She continued to stare ahead as she spoke. “Thank you for being here with me. I’ve been alone a long time and I know it isn’t good for me, but it’s what I had to do…need to do. But…I need to figure this out. An extra set of eyes and ears will be welcome.”

Paige leaned into her. “It’s what the pack family is for, right?”

Once inside the station, they found a person behind a plexiglass window. There was an opening they could speak through. Tamsin approached. “Hi, I’m here to speak with Officer Summers.”

A haggard-looking woman in a brown business suit sat at a desk covered in pictures and knickknacks. She had long painted nails that clacked on her keyboard, and she smacked on gum. “Do you have an appointment, hun?”

She smiled at her. “I do, if you could tell him Tamsin Hath is here to see him.”

The receptionist continued typing for a few more seconds before she looked up at her and her lips lifted on the sides, but it wasn’t a smile. Grabbing her phone, she punched a few numbers. “There’s a lady here to see you. A Ms. Tamsin Hath.” She tilted her head and gazed at her. “Sounds good.” Hanging up, she used her chin to point at some chairs by the wall. “Go have a seat and he’ll be with you in a moment.”

As soon as her message was given, she went back to work, Tamsin forgotten.

They headed to the seats she indicated and sat. She read the fliers around the room, most of them services offered with contact numbers, email addresses, and QR codes. She recognized several of them from similar signs hung on bulletin boards at the school where she taught in Chicago.

It didn’t take long for a young officer, maybe mid-thirties, to come out. He wasn’t very tall, just a few inches over five and a half feet, but looked fit. His brown hair looked practically buzzed off and his blue eyes pierced Tamsin. It didn’t seem like he was the kind of man to miss much. His eyes narrowed a bit as they fell on Paige beside Tamsin, Tamsin’s hand resting on Paige’s thigh.

“You two came together? Paige, I thought we’d talk later. You know Ms. Hath?”

Paige looked at the officer and then her, uncertainty coloring her face. Enjoying the game, Tamsin lifted her hand to Paige’s cheek, and pulled her in for a quick kiss. Then turned to the officer. “Yes, Paige and I know each other. Will that be a problem? I thought since we both wanted some of your time, we could do it together.
