Tuesday was an ordinary workday, with no sudden emergencies. Aunt Harriet called to tell me she’d baked the apple pie and was about to make a healthy green bean casserole, honey-glazed sweet potatoes, and whole wheat stuffing.

“I thought I was making the stuffing,” I said.

“You can make it next year.”

“I’ve invited someone to join us,” I told her.

“How lovely. In that case I’ll make another healthy dessert,” she said. “Cranberry bread pudding. I’ve been wanting to try it.”

“Sounds like you’re making most of the dinner,” I teased her.

“You’ve got enough to do now that you’re looking at wedding venues.”

“How did you know that?”

“Our neighbors the Claymonts have a granddaughter who works at the Lynley Country Club. She happened to be visiting them and mentioned that you and Dylan came in to see the place.”

Cassidy. I laughed. “There are no secrets in Clover Ridge.”

“So? What did you think? I hear the Lynley Country Club is classy.”

“It’s beautiful, but a little too formal for my taste.”

“I’m sure you’ll find just what you’re looking for,” Aunt Harriet said.

After work, I stopped at the supermarket and bought a few items for Thursday’s dinner—Brussel sprouts, salad ingredients, pineapple, and cranberries and an orange for a sugarless cranberry sauce. Dylan arrived home at six thirty, and we had dinner. Afterward, I made the cranberry sauce, then went into the living room to watch the late evening news with Dylan.

He slipped an arm around me. Smoky Joe sauntered over and plopped down between us. “Finished for the night?”

“Just about.”

“Did you ever stop to wonder why we have these elaborate Thanksgiving meals?”

“Of course. It’s tradition,” I said.

“It is now, based on some lore that might never have taken place. Least of all that turkeys were served at the first American Thanksgiving.”

“Still, it’s one of my favorite holidays,” I said as I snuggled closer to Dylan. “And you get to watch a football game.”

“True. I like turkey and many of the sides, but do we have to have so many?”

I laughed.

“Admit it, you and Harriet could eliminate two if not four dishes, and we’d still have plenty to eat on Thursday.”

“But making a large variety is fun. It’s one tradition I really like.”

Dylan kissed my cheek. “To tell the truth, so do I.”
