FIFTEEN

XANDER

I stood only a few feet away from Ford as he tried to bait his hook. I could have gone easy on him, but where was the fun in that?

His eyes met mine, and he scowled. “You do this for fun?”

“It’s not like I get some sick pleasure from killing worms. It’s part of the process. It’s how my dad taught me to fish instead of using fake ass shit.”

“Now what do I do?” He looked at his pole like it was a foreign object, and I guess it was to him.

Moving behind him, I wrapped my arms around Ford and gripped the wrist he was holding the pole in. “Put your thumb on that button, but don’t press on it yet.” I watched as he did as instructed, and I scooted to the side behind him. “Now, pull your arm back.” I guided him through the motion a couple of times and stepped back. “When you get to the top of the arc, push the button. Watch where your line lands, and after a couple of seconds, activate the reel to stop the line from dropping any further.”

“And that’s it?” He asked, looking at me over his shoulder.

“Then you wait to feel a fish on your line. Once you feel like one’s grabbed your worm, give your pole a good yank to make sure you’ve got him on your hook, and then start reeling it in.”

“Okay, seems simple enough.” Ford shrugged and threw his line in one simple motion like he’d been fishing all of his life. It wasn’t like it was rocket science, but it was still annoying he did it perfectly the first time.

I went back to my spot and cast my line. I wasn’t sure why, but a strange surge of wanting to be the first to catch a fish hit me. I couldn’t let someone who’d never fished before catch one before me.

After a few minutes, Ford sat in one of the chairs we’d brought down to the shoreline. “How long do we have to wait?”

“There’s no time limit. It can take seconds, minutes, or hours. There’s no telling. You need to keep quiet, so you don’t scare the fish away.”

“That sounds like bullshit right there,” he mumbled, loud enough for me to hear him.

“It’s the way it is. If you’re not having any luck in one spot, you can always go to another location and try your luck there.”

Ten minutes later, Ford was reeling in his line and picking up his chair. He didn’t speak a word as he headed in the opposite direction from me. I watched until he was out of sight and then reeled my own line in. I wasn’t going to move, though. I was going to stay here and try my luck now that he was gone. We didn’t have long until it would be dark, and then we’d need to start a fire.

While it would have been nice to be sitting next to Ford watching the sunset, I needed to remember this, whatever it was, had a timeline.
