Elsewhere in Hava, Malak steps out of the bank after Saba has helped her open a bank account. She beams with pride. Imagine her, a girl who would have been the property of a man, never permitted to make a decision of her own, handling her own finances. She can hardly believe this is her own life, but miraculously, it is.

She and Saba make their way to the shops and start shopping for clothes to prepare Malak for her new life and a new job. When she ran away, she did not take any of her belongings with her. Then, during her time at camp, she wore only the approved uniform, which she is still wearing to this day.

They pass by the servant store, and Saba suggests that Malak may want to purchase one or two to work as assistants for home or assist with her work. Malak shakes her head back and forth firmly. “No. If I am going to spend Mazza’s money, I would prefer to buy a house. Not servants,” she says.

Saba tries to convince her that she can do both and that it cannot hurt to check out the shop. After a few moments of discussion, Malak relents, and they step inside. Upon their entry, the store owner immediately starts calling the men to form a display line. In front of each man, a board provides extensive details about him. The owner explains that the line goes from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Malak studies the servants’ boards and selects two from the medium price range.

“You have made a wise choice, ma’am,” the owner says. “They will serve you well.”

Malak completes the paperwork to finalize her purchase, and they leave the store. Just then, Saba receives a call from Stephany indicating that the queen requires her presence at the palace immediately. Saba acknowledges she will be there and hangs up.

“We must leave now; we can go house shopping tomorrow. Can you call some realtors today?” Saba asks Malak, who nods. They leave the mall and head directly to Saba’s house.

The moment they arrive, Saba changes her clothes into something more professional and leaves for the palace. While she has no idea what the reason behind the summons is, it seems important.

When she arrives, she finds Dibby, Miley, and the queen in her office. They immediately catch Saba up with the day’s happenings, summarizing the calls they received from Hamarata.

“This is a good sign,” Saba notes, “but we need to be careful dealing with them.”

Everyone agrees, and Mazza shares her concerns with the group.

“They have been trying desperately to get Malak back. She has been a key bartering piece in all of our conversations. I worry this might be some plan to kidnap her under the guise of a diplomatic visit.”

The others nod in agreement, validating her concerns. Saba rubs her chin thoughtfully, then suggests, “We can send her to visit Nikki and ensure she is stationed somewhere far away from Hamarata.”

The queen thinks it over, then proposes that Saba and Malak go on a trip together instead.
