Armour looked carefully up and down the road in front of Gim’s house when he left. It was very dark out; he saw no cars. It was such a short distance to the Muthukarmas’ house that he’d walked it.

He kept the envelope tucked in his jacket, out of sight. A great horned owl swooped down in front of him, startling him. He started walking faster. When he got inside his house, Armour dumped the files on the kitchen table. The pile of material he was collecting on the whole Torso affair was growing. He kept all the lights off except for the bulb above the table. After checking that all the doors were locked he got himself settled in the kitchen and started going through the files.

He separated the files pertaining to the murder case, files he had gone through many times back when civilians were allowed access. They had been the basis for the article he’d written. That and the trial transcript, a copy of which he had obtained from the courts.

The first thing Armour wanted to do was find out if there was any mention of a baby dying in the Krantz home. He had to believe that even eighty years ago there would have been some sort of police report. He went through everything twice and couldn’t find any mention of it. Armour found that odd but not alarming. He couldn’t put a finger on why this detail was important to him, just that it was an odd piece of the puzzle and he wanted a complete picture of the Krantz’s marriage, however brief.

What he did find was an arrest record for Evelyn that he had not been aware of, dating from almost two years before the murder. She had been arrested at the Passion Club, 469 Cannon Street. Armour raised his eyebrows. It was the same place that picture of her dancing with Richard had been taken. The file listed the charge as “lewd and lascivious behaviour.” The club must have been raided. Evelyn was booked at 1:30 a.m. the morning of September 14th, 1924. What the hell had been going on there? Evelyn would have been fourteen years old then. What was a fourteen-year-old doing at a nightclub at 1:30 in the morning? Armour kept reading. The end of the file stated that charges had been dropped and listed a release time of 4:48 a.m. They had only held her for three hours.

Armour dug out one of his books on the Torso murders and flipped to the picture of Evelyn being led in handcuffs, presumably into a police station. It was dark out. Evelyn’s right hand was cuffed to a woman in front of her, probably a police matron. Her left hand was stretched behind her hand, cuffed to a man, probably a detective. His face was turned away. Evelyn looked to be in her element in this photo: she looked gorgeous in a short flapper-style dress. There was a brooch at her neck, and she wore a cloche hat.
