Chapter 25

Luke

Admittedly, I have gotten myself into a bit of a situation here. Spending Halloween night with Bobby snowballed into a crazy notion that I should reveal myself to her in some fanciful fairy tale manner, possibly driven by subconscious suggestive thoughts based on our variation of beauty and the beast costumes.

In my polyester fur-induced heat-stroke state, I thought maybe she would have an epiphany when she saw me a few days later at the café. Since it became evident she has trust issues, I wanted to show her that if she was willing to put her faith in Sasquatch, to let him buy her drinks and lead her around blindly, then surely, she could put her trust in me. Her only option would be to realise we could spend time together as Luca and Bobby like we had as Sasquatch and princess. And presto-bango, she would finally talk to me.

Although, I’m pretty sure the beast does trick the girl into staying with him in the story, which is probably not the best approach for a modern-day woman. Especially when trying to teach a lesson in trust and honesty. I don’t have a lot of experience with that sort of tactic and I’m not one hundred percent sure on its success or failure rate, but since it is now fifteen minutes past the time we were supposed to meet at Laynie’s and she isn’t here, I’m thinking I should remove deception from the repertoire.

I order myself a coffee to go and as I walk outside, my phone rings. I hurry over to a bench on the sidewalk so I can put my coffee down, take off my gloves and answer the call before I miss it. Canadian winters were not taken into account during the design phase of touch screens.

“Bobby!” is how I answer the phone. My voice is a mixture of excitement and concern. Happy that she called but not looking forward to what she has to say. If she wanted to play nice, she would have met me here. She hates public confrontations, which should be enough of a clue.

“Luca,” she responds. Her voice is stone cold. Oh yeah. She definitely has things she wants to say that can’t be said in public. “Or should I call you Sasquatch?” Badger, that double-crossing...badger. One night with a woman and he’s already giving away state secrets.

I pick up my coffee and look to the bundled up old woman sitting on the bench for permission to sit next to her. She nods with a smile and I take a seat, hoping that she won’t be able to hear Bobby unleash on me.

“I obviously know about the little game you played with me on Halloween.” I try to say that it wasn’t a game because I did not find her behaviour humorous in the least, but she doesn’t let me get a syllable in. “It was a dick move and I’m not coming for coffee.”

“I got that impression when I sat there waiting for you.
