Iâm in the kitchen filling the kettle to the brim, then place it on the stove to boil. I told Patrick Iâd be up to make his friend tea, and I meant it. I rub my eyes to get the grit of sleep out and lean my hip against the counter as I wait for the kettle to whistle.
âNo, I got it. Weâll burn them. Go take care of Poppy.â
I snap my head up when I hear Boomerâs voice and the tea kettle whistles at that exact moment. I hurry to the cabinet that holds all the mugs and take three down, fill them with tea bags, and pour boiling hot water over them.
Iâm nervous. Is that okay? Iâve never met anyone from Patrickâs AA meetings except Wendy, his sponsor. I want to make a good impression on his friend, and by the sound of it, it seems like sheâs had a hell of a time.
Deep breaths. Everything will be fine.
I place the mugs on the table and sit. No, maybe I should stand. Maybe thatâs too intimidating? Sitting is best. No, then it will look like Iâm waiting. I stand right as Patrick and a girl come into the kitchen. A very young girl.
Oh my god, the poor thing. Sheâs skin and bone. Her hair is messy and bright blue, matted to her scalp, and she has dark circles under her eyes. Sheâs flickering her eyes all around as if something is going to jump out of the corner and snatch her.
I study her and notice a very similar tic that I have.
Sheâs scratching her inner arms.
Her eyes are red and swollen from tears, and the bruise on the right side of her face is nasty-looking. Itâs black and looks painful.
âPoppy, this is Sunnie. My olâ lady. Sunnie, this is Poppy.â
âHi Popââ my words are cut short when she slams against me.
Poppy wraps her arms around my waist and buries her face against my chest. Her hot tears wet my skin, and I return her needy embrace.
âThank you so much. Thank you both so much,â she sobs. âI know you didnât have to let him help, but you did. Thank you.â
âOf course. Any friend of Patrickâs is a friend of mine. Take a seat. I made us some tea.â I push against her shoulders, breaking the hug, and thatâs when her arms fall to her side. Thatâs when I notice the blood. âHow about we get you cleaned up first?â I walk her over to the sink and turn on the faucet. Hot and cold water at the same time, so itâs comfortable. I guide her hands under the steady stream, squeeze soap on her hands, and take the rough bristle brush, and scrub across her hands. I make sure to get under the nails too.
âDoesnât it bother you?â she whispers, giving me a quick glance before looking away.
âOh no. This isnât anything. You are in a place where everyone understands where youâre coming from.â The water that swirls down the drain turns pink as the blood rushes off her hands.
