Shane rubbed his nose the moment he entered the flower shop in the Westchester mall. Too many different fragrances meshed together and triggered allergies he hadn’t even known he had. The central air and filters helped a bit, but the clock on his tolerance of the place ticked quickly.

“Do you want to tell me again why we’re here?” he asked Eoghan, who perused the store, on the hunt for what, Shane wasn’t sure.

“I’m picking up something for Ayanna,” Eoghan said and fluttered his brows.

Shane groaned even though he laughed at his friend. “No, man. Flowers? Really?”

“Yeah. I think she’s on me again,” Eoghan said and picked up a vase and angled it in the light.

“And what makes you think that?” Despite Eoghan’s foolery, Shane’s curiosity won out.

“She touched my bum. Made me want to ride her right then and there,” Eoghan said.

“You do realize that she’s your rehabilitation therapist. Even the physios in Ireland dig into those muscles. Why do you think it means something?”

“It was the way she touched my bum,” his friend said, his tone exaggerated.

“Ugh,” was all Shane could come up with. “Best you give her flowers to apologize for the gobshite things you said when you first arrived.”

“I need to show her I’m still romantic,” Eoghan said and rubbed his clean-shaven face.

“Which part of you?” Shane shoved him.

“The part that took her to the Shelbourne and to Kilkenny,” Eoghan replied.

“Shelbourne was my idea, and Kilkenny was because she only had a day left and wanted to sightsee. You forgot all the running your mouth did at the bar that time?”

“But Aviva really got her ready,” Eoghan said.

“Please.” Shane held up a hand. “The vile things you’re talkin’.”

“Help me out, mate. You’re much better at this than I am.”

Why he should help Eoghan came down to a simple word. Friendship. One that he valued despite Eoghan’s shortcomings. He had a good heart that had been ill influenced by his overbearing father, but still, despite Eileen, he was mostly a good mate.

“How about these?” Eoghan showed him a bouquet with teddy bears and such.

“Tone it down a bit, hot stuff. She’s a lady of class.” Shane put on his best impression of manners for the invisible gentry.

“Shut your bake and just help me pick something out.”

“These ones,” Shane said when he saw a bouquet that reminded him of the wildflowers in the garden at the house and thought Ayanna might like that.

“You think they’re big enough?”

Shane rolled his eyes to the ceiling. “Bigger isn’t always better.”

“Speak for yourself,” Eoghan sniggered.

“Jaysus, let me out of this nightmare,” Shane said. “Trust me. She’ll like them.”

Eoghan shrugged, and after they left the florist, they returned to Purchase House with a little time to spare before Eoghan’s session. Ayanna sat in the living room, looking at a diagram of a body that she used to note Eoghan’s improvement.

“Hey, guys, how was town?” she asked, looking cute as hell in her scrubs. He liked how she changed the colors, each one bringing out her skin tone and accentuating every part of her body he liked.
