“I don’t owe you any explanation. Please, just leave me alone.”

Thanks to Wrath’s charm (?) and a very chatty assistant, we tracked Victoria down to the beach. She was walking her dog, an enormous and playful Labrador, as she kicked her way through the sand, arms folded petulantly across her chest.

I put a hand on her shoulder, but she yanked away, her stride quickening. “Victoria, please. I just want to understand. You said you met Jeff in college, but that’s not true. You grew up with him. You two lived together in the same house.”

She whirled on me, a finger pointed in my face. “Just because you saw an old photo in some stupid magazine doesn’t mean—”

“When I touched you, I saw the poltergeists,” I pressed on. “I told Tamora about the visions, and she said those were Jeff’s memories. I didn’t understand how I was seeing someone else’s memories through a third party. But if you grew up with Jeff, it all makes sense. I didn’t see Jeff’s memories at all, did I? I saw yours.”

Victoria shook her freshly blonde bangs away from her face. I couldn’t see her eyes behind her massive black sunglasses, but I saw the taut pull of her lips as her mouth arced into a frown. “You had no right digging into my past,” she said. “I didn’t ask for that, and I don’t want it. I want to help Tamora, too. But not if it costs me my privacy. Nothing is worth that.”

“I understand,” I said. “That night at the séance? I didn’t know Tamora was going to ask Andromeda about the disappeared commune. I was angry about it. I don’t want anyone digging into my past, either.” I softened my voice, trying to make myself sound vulnerable. That was especially hard for me since vulnerable is the thing I try hardest not to be. “We’re calling Cecil in the next few days. I need to prove he’s not who he says he is. The only anecdote I have to use against him is the poltergeists. Please, Victoria. Help us out here.”

Victoria stopped walking and turned her head towards the cameramen. “I won’t say a word on camera,” she said. “Not a single word. But get rid of them… and I’ll talk.”

Turning away, Wrath strode over to the camera crew. “Go on, get outta here,” he said, shooing them off with grand, swooping arm gestures. “She’s not gonna sign any release forms, so there’s no point filming this. I’m serious. Get outta here!”

The cameramen walked backward, still filming. “Just let us get some B roll, man. We’ll turn off the audio.”

Wrath bent down and picked up a sand bucket and hurled it at the cameramen. He launched a second and a third, too. They each hit their targets squarely in the chest. “I’m not asking! Get outta here! You don’t want to tick me off, man. I have no problem grabbing that camera and throwing it in the ocean. Just watch me.”

That seemed to do the trick because the crew grumbled something and lowered the cameras to their sides.
