They were back at the office, and Eva had her flipchart laid out before her. The paper was old and yellowing. She’d not used the pad in a long time, but now her laptop had been requisitioned by Destiny-Alexis, she had the urge to brainstorm her ideas without her usual outlet. Dan knew what Eva was like. He had to endure being her audience until she’d worked things through. He should have expected her to be a little jittery, but on the phone she’d seemed like she was holding up well. Now just back from the meeting with Chatterley and she was speaking as fast as an automatic rifle as she blasted ideas all over the sheet with a big red marker. The first line she wrote was 3 DAYS in a psychopathic comedy hand, triple underlined. Beneath that she scribbled:

Rita C - fraud and affair

Stealing our tech

Assault and threats – Dan and friends

Threats from Mr Blonde

Lying and use of a con trick

Misleading website – easy sex for men, and convenience for women

Evidence?

Fraud- against Rita not Feldman

Assault – no known witnesses

Mr Blonde – same

“Is that all we’ve got?” asked Eva, turning the page her way as if the act itself might reveal a new angle.

“Yeah. I know it’s thin. So far we’ve got nothing. Your little lunch date uncovered that the website is duplicitous. Well, sorry Eva, but big surprise there. That’s just sales psychology. Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, and all that. That’s what he’ll say. Men and women are interested in different things, especially when it comes to sex. It’s a no brainer that a company will pitch different ways to different gender clients.”

“Dan, they are telling guys they are going to get easy clean lays, and plenty of them. That’s not what the site says on its US billboards or on its website. That’s sleazy and crass. You think their women customers want to be viewed as desperate housewives who give it away?”

Dan shrugged. “Some maybe. I don’t know.”

“You are such a guy, Dan. Take my word for it, it looks bad.”

“Think judicial system, Eva. Think courtroom. If it won’t hold up in court it’s not got legs, and Feldman will know that. He must have been facing law suits a half dozen times in the last decade. He’ll know.”

“Okay. It’s thin.”

“It’s anorexic thin.”

“Right.”

“Then all the fraud stuff. That’s Rita Chatterley defrauding her husband, not Feldman. Morgan won’t want that laundry dragged out in public, even if he thinks so right now. So with the fraud angle, Feldman’s in the clear too. Then there’s the broken-down car con and the theft of your kit and the threats and violence. It’s our word against theirs.”

Eva looked across at Dan, her eyebrows rising in a forlorn arrow.

“So what you’re saying is we’ve got nothing. We’re back to square one with just three days until Destiny-Alexis takes the FTSE by storm and changes the world as we know it.”

“That’s some nice exaggeration, Eva, but yeah, kind of.
