The image of Quill and Archer fighting on the roof of a moving train flashed through his mind, swiftly followed by shards from the night at Crosstown Mine, and he shivered, turning the page to hide the memories.

The evening died slowly into darkness, penetrated only by the reading lamp as James worked through more and startling reports of murders by poison. One involved another woman called Mary Ann. This time Mary Ann Cotton, a woman who had done away with three husbands and ten children over the years, apparently, for insurance money. The victims had died of ‘gastric illness’, later, after exhumation, re-diagnosed as arsenic poisoning, and another woman went to the scaffold.

It was interesting, if dire, reading, and each case he reviewed brought him back to the same suspect—Mrs Ware.

Like everyone else, she had the opportunity to buy and administer the poison, but the colonel’s illness was not gastric. Markland had diagnosed gradual paralysis, probably caused by a chemical as yet unidentified, and Mrs Ware was not a chemist.

Besides, Colonel Ware had voluntarily signed his money and house to his beloved wife, and if the way Mrs Ware spoke about her sister was to be believed, she didn’t relish the idea of having to move away. Why kill a man whose money and home you already had, only to live where you didn’t want to be?

James’ mind worked harder, looking for the less obvious. Perhaps she was lying. Perhaps she wanted the proceeds of the sale for herself, and her husband out of the way, because…
