Chapter 8

A quickie? Tucker had never in a million years expected it, and had to admit, he felt much better now. Connecting with Tara on any level seemed to do that for him.

Edda hadn’t uttered a word to them since the incident. Not that Tara had said much to him, either. Somehow he knew she didn’t want Sarah or Joey to know anything about them. It was the ‘why’ that bothered him… Must have something to do with a professor from her past. At least that’s what he was getting from the bits and pieces he’d been able to pick up.

He wanted to get her alone so he could explain his plans to her before anyone else dropped the bomb, but Marshall slapped him on the back. “So Tucker, I understand you’re transferring here next semester.”

He swallowed the lump in his throat and glanced around. Only the men were outside. “Yeah, I just signed a lease on an apartment today.”

“Is that right?”

He nodded.

“I guess you’ll be seeing Tara?” Marshall asked in a hushed voice.

“Yes.”

“Good. She’s a nice lady, but I guess you’ve figured that out.”

He’d never been good at male bonding. “Yeah. Look, I’m not—”

“Tuck, tell Marshall about…” Joey called out, and they turned the conversation to the old days of high school football and other, better suited topics. He wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but he was getting antsy, ready for this evening to end.

To get Tara alone. As if his thoughts made her appear, she strolled out carrying a tray with thick, delicious-looking slices of pecan pie with scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream on top.

She put it on the patio table and turned to take the plates from Sarah. Watching her graceful movements, his body jolted to life with need for her.

“Tara, did Tucker tell you ya’ll are going to be neighbors?” Sarah questioned.

The scene unfolded as if in slow motion. The ceramic plate Tara had been holding slipped from her hand and crashed on the concrete patio. She wasn’t moving except for the slight tremble of her hand. He chanced a peek into her eyes, but she wasn’t looking his way.

“Gosh, I don’t know what got into me,” she said quickly, and turned to get the broom Joey was already walking over with.

“No problem,” Joey mumbled. “I’ve got it. Tucker is renting Ms. Bushmayer’s apartment,” he added.

Her eyes met his. A flash of pain spread across her face before agitation set in. “That’s funny. I didn’t even know he was here for more than a few days.”

Tucker swallowed down the lump in this throat. He didn’t want to do this here or now. “I uh...”

“He’s taken a position with the History department. I thought I told you when I asked you to pick him up at the airport,” Sarah said, passing the pieces of pie around.

Tara shook her head but continued to assist her sister. “Look, sis, I’ve got to be up early tomorrow. I’m going to have to pass on dessert.” She took a step back.
