In the soft, warm light of an early evening in June, Vicky and Gordy can be found picking strawberries in the garden plot they share with Marie and Jim on the farm. An amiable farm cat cruises through the tall stems and brushes and bumps up against Gordy, hoping for a chin scratch. Tiny, sweet strawberries cover the bottom of Vicky’s white pail. She tells me,

It’s these little places that have a uniqueness about them and still have a connection with the land that are important. Should everything be technically advanced? I don’t think so. People have a right to live a simple life, a hard life, if they want to. [Gordy and Jim] love the land. They really do. I know that for a fact. They do things the hard way. Change would mean more chemicals, fertilizers. They choose not to do that. Smaller farms can still make some of those choices. I think they’re relevant. All of this is relevant.
