Chapter Twelve

Tate knocked on the condo’s front door, waiting for his cousin Jax to answer. He knew it might take a few minutes. Jax Temple, known as J.T. by his family, had been injured in the playoff game while playing for Miami.

The front door opened, and his cousin stood framed in the doorway, leaning heavily on a cane. It felt odd seeing Jax hurt. The guy was a machine, and he’d always seemed indestructible. Yet he’d proved his vulnerability during the Miami versus New York playoff game when he’d blown out his knee.

“Tate! What are you doing here?” Jax moved aside, a grimace of pain crossing his face, and Tate wondered just how badly he’d hurt his knee.

“I couldn’t miss the opportunity to see you while you’re in town.” He walked into the condo and headed for the huge sliding doors that led to the balcony. “Besides, it’s been too long since I got to see the view from your place, you lucky bastard.”

“Yeah, right. Lucky. Tell that to my knee. Two surgeries, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and it still hurts like hell.”

Tate watched his cousin move across the living room to stand beside him, looking out at the mountains in the distance. With his north-facing view, he might not have the bright neon from downtown, but neither of them seemed to care. Growing up, Tate tried to spend as much time at the Temples’ house as he could. “Truth, cuz. How bad is it?”

Jax shrugged. “It’s progressing every week. Some days are better than others. The surgeons and therapists all swear I’ll be fit and ready to play come training camp.”

Tate heard what he said and also what he didn’t. “But?”

Jax leaned a little heavier on his cane. “What if they’re lying? I’m doing everything they say. All the exercises. Staying off the pain meds unless things are really bad. It’s better, I know that. But what if—”

“Don’t. Look, you’ve gotta be realistic. Miami is investing a hell of a lot of money in you. Doctors, therapists, everything to get you back into playing shape. Do you really think they’d do that if they weren’t a hundred percent positive you’d play again?”

“Guess you’re right. Anyway, enough about me.” Jax nodded toward the refrigerator. “Want a beer?”

“Sounds good.”

Tate followed his cousin into the kitchen and quirked his brow when Jax pulled a beer and a bottled water from the fridge and handed him the beer.

“Trainer wants me off all alcohol. On the rare chance I take a pain med, it could cause complications.” He took a long drink of his bottled water. “Don’t miss it much, but an occasional beer would be nice.”

Tate started to hand his beer back. He didn’t mind drinking water. Jax shook his head. “Go ahead. I honestly don’t miss it all that much.”

Tate walked to the couch and plopped down, knowing Jax needed to get off his leg. He watched the
