Ana took a picture of Slash. She sent it to Katie. Katie texted back. “Gross!” Ana smiled.

Gran and Ana sat down. Other people from the park had joined them. Everyone talked and laughed.

“Anyone hungry?” Hank asked. Then he left the area. Soon he was back with pancakes. “Help yourself,” he told them.

Gran ate two pancakes. Ana ate one. Then they went back to the RV.

“You’re so brave, Gran,” Ana said. “Nothing scares you. Coyotes. Snakes. Taking this road trip. Are you ever afraid?”

Gran smiled. “Sure. I’ve done some scary things. Like f l ying planes. And I’ve told you about being in a war. I was only 22. I worked in a field hospital. At times it was terrifying.” Gran reached down. She raised one leg of her jeans. Ana saw a scar.

“I didn’t know, Gran.”

“It could have been worse,” Gran said. “But I made it. And I was able to help others who were hurt and scared. Fear was not going to stop me from doing that.”
