OFELIA HOOFED IT TO BYWATER AND WAS a sweaty mess by the time she arrived. She ignored the dirty looks of a corner grocery store owner as she planted herself in the door of his shop and absorbed the air conditioning. She had no intention of moving until she no longer had a pounding headache and wanted to kill her parents.

“If you want to steal the AC, then you have to buy something,” the man said from behind the counter, folding his arms over his chest and pinning her with the darkest look in his repertoire.

“I’ll totally buy something,” Ofelia promised. “Just give me a second.”

“Why? Are you going to die? I’m not saying I want that to happen, but if it does it would be better if you picked another doorway.”

“I just need to cool down.” Ofelia opted to go with the truth. “I had to sneak away from my parents — otherwise they would’ve come with me — and that meant I had to keep moving. I couldn’t sit around and wait for an Uber.”

The owner’s expression shifted into something more sympathetic. “Oh, I know how that goes. Where did you leave them?”

“With someone who probably gave up trying to distract them after five minutes. Knowing my parents, they’re scouring the Quarter for me right now.”

“Better there than here.”

“Totally.”

Once she’d cooled down enough that she no longer felt sick to her stomach, Ofelia bought a huge bottle of water and some gum — she couldn’t carry much more — and then waved her goodbyes to the owner. He didn’t look thrilled with her tiny purchase, but he didn’t give her grief either.

Ofelia stuck to the shady sidewalks as she meandered around the area. She wasn’t sure where she wanted to start with her questions today, but she knew she had to be more proactive than she’d been the day before. She was halfway down Royal Street when something caught her eye.

She pulled up short, standing directly in front of what looked to be a fresh mural. This one depicted a scene rather than a hodgepodge of images, and the scene looked like something straight out of Ofelia’s nightmares.

“I wondered if you would make it over here,” Sully said as he stepped out from inside an art store and caught sight of her. He was both amused and leery, briefly wondering if she would cause a scene and start yelling at him regarding his abandonment earlier.

“Yes, I somehow made it,” Ofelia said dryly, not looking away from the mural. “By the way, you’re in big trouble. Like ... big, big trouble. It took me forever to ditch my parents.”

“And where are they now?”

“Either driving Pascal nuts or searching the Quarter for me.”

“Ah.” Sully sidled closer and lightly checked his hip into her side. “I knew you would find a way to control the situation. You’re extremely smart ... and pretty ... and resourceful.”

“Stuff it.” Ofelia was in no mood for his lame makeup attempt. “I’m going to punish you severely later.
