“So why don’t you go to the police? You said you have information the police don’t have that would help the investigation.”

“Because the police have nothing to offer me in exchange.”

ALLY and STEVE

Nothing too extraordinary happens the rest of the day. Erica leaves town to meet with Ryan’s family in order to start preparations for the funeral service and I learn that Robbie went with her.

Riley managed to secure an interview with Demi, who just keeps repeating how in love she and Ryan were, and how devastated she is by this tragedy. I admire her nerve, but I also do believe that some part of her truly loved him.

“Then again, she’s also a good actress, she could easily be pretending,” Emma reminds me later, when we meet for coffee at Isola Bella. “I’m not saying she didn’t love him, but remember, she negotiated a fake relationship with him for publicity. Is that something you would do if you really cared about someone?”

“Maybe that was just her way of keeping him around,” Isabella suggests. “She was in love, and couldn’t stand the idea of losing him forever.”

“You know Isa, that sounds pretty plausible to me.”

Right then, I get a text from Steve Wyatt. I’ve been waiting for a call from him for hours; I thought he had changed his mind.

“He’ll be here in ten minutes,” I tell the girls.

While I’m waiting, I call Melinda and ask her to call me back. I’m curious to hear what she has to say about Demi.

Steve Wyatt strolls in confidently and winks at me as he sits down. “Hard to miss you with a pretty face like that.”

“I hope you don’t think flattery is a means to win me over.”

“Why not? I’ve been known to charm a pretty girl or two in my time.”

I don’t think he’s funny, but I can’t help smiling. He’s just like some idiot frat boy who knows he’s got a winning smile and uses it on everybody. From the way he acts and dresses you’d think he was 25, but I know in reality he’s pushing 35.

“Ally Rhodes! Can I call you Ally? I’ve been reading your blog, and you have a solid reputation. I hope you and I can help each other out.”

“I’m not sure I want to help you,” I retort.

He bursts out laughing. “Another diehard Ryan Steele fan?”

“I don’t see anything wrong with that. The fact is, I don’t like people who spread lies about other people, and from what I’ve been told, that’s exactly what you planned on doing.”

“Who said I was planning to spread lies? Erica, Mila?” I remain silent and he continues. “I’ll put my cards on the table if you give me the details about the crime scene. See, despite what you think, I don’t just go around making things up. I choose my sources carefully.”

“I didn’t see anything other than what the newspapers mentioned.”

“I doubt the newspapers wrote about each person’s reaction to the discovery of the body.”

“Isn’t it a bit macabre
