Chapter Eighteen
Alistair
Normally, he wasnât one to be called into the city to deal with some form of human crime. Yet, during the Witching Hour, Alistair gritted his teeth. He pulled the black leather coat around him and tried to keep to the shadows upon arriving where Beau and his team waited.
This city never slept, but the streets were emptier than it would be later on in the day. He rounded the bend to see the flashing blue lights on the blue-and-white police car.
âWhat are you doing here, Alistair? I didnât think you received my message.â Beau stood in front of an alleyway between two apartment buildings. Thunder boomed, and the storm that was just on his periphery arrived.
âPretty rough out here, huh?â he answered, and shoved his hands into his pockets. The storms had a way of appearing out of nowhere, blowing from the river to land. âThanks for your message. Local PD is promising its discretion, as well.â
âI see you followed my advice.â Rose, as the Orderâs supernatural liaison, and the link between the Order and the human world, was a walking lexicon of information, sidled up to his side. âWell, donât thank me quite yet. I dare say, something is going on around these parts.â She twirled her finger around to indicate the city.
âSomething is always happening in this area, I assume, as tourists make their way through these enigmatic streets,â Alistair countered.
âBut this is not about tourists,â she retorted.
Their window for him to take a look at the scene would only last so long before the other police officers would show up and begin the human part of investigating.
âAre you going to tell me the details here on the street or take me inside and let me see whatâs occurred for myself?â Alistair asked.
Beau gestured his head to the side, and they followed.
âAnd that is why youâre here.â Rose pressed her lips together. Oh, boy, Alistair knew what that meant. This was not going to be good news. âWith all the caretaking of your latest mewler, a Ms. Cutlass, Iâm surprised you were able to pull yourself away.â
Mewler? An interesting term for a new vampire, but he wasnât going to spar with her tonight. Rose had never liked vampires and seemed hell-bent on creating piles of dirt and ashes.
âWe all have our talents and uses.â Alistair frowned. He didnât understand her anger with him, and right now, he couldnât care. Nothing could distract him from finding out if a supernatural had killed this human, and if so, which kind and which one? The Order would hunt down the perp to not risk the human world learning of them. âNot a drop of blood found?â he asked.
âNo. Looking at her skin, it is practically translucent. And as we know, only mewlers are reckless enough to do something so callous, as they canât control themselves or their appetites. So, how is your recently changed one doing?
Beau interjected. âI know youâre not suggestingââ
âIâm doing more than suggesting.â Rose cut him off and crossed her arms.
