Chapter Eleven

Detective Hill brought Mac with him so they wouldn’t be impeded from seeing me. Once Mac checked on me to make sure I was alright he looked around. Looking at the car, he said, “did you shoot the passenger?”

“Yep.”

“How could you know that,” Hill asked.

“There are only three shots from his truck. He’s a pretty good shot.” He turned to Hill. “You’re officer unloaded his gun.” Mac turned back to me, “was he scared?”

“I’m sure he had some fear but only because he was taking the full load of a MAC-10. Once he had a chance he didn’t even think, he just unloaded his gun. He’s a little messed up now and probably won’t sleep for some time, but if he recovers from this, he will be a great cop,” I said.

“Why do you think he won’t survive this,” Hill questioned.

Mac took this one, “have you ever shot someone?”

“No, thankfully.”

“It changes you, he won’t sleep for weeks. Make sure he gets some help. Even when you are in the right, killing someone is not something that is easy to live with.”

“I can only guess you both have plenty of experience,” Hill said.

We both just nodded.

“I’m not sure it would bother me,” Hill said.

“You can try and be bad-ass about it if you like but if you ever have to, you’ll understand. Everyone thinks it’s easy. The decision is usually easy but living with it is another story,” Mac said.

“Please make sure he doesn’t get a hard time. It won’t help if everyone makes fun of this,” I said.

He nodded.

A newer blacked out Tahoe pulled up. Hill said, “Oh God. It’s the Captain.”

He got out of his truck and being the smart ass I was I said, “at least he drives himself.”

Hill chuckled.

The Captain walked over to us. He stuck his hand out for Hill. “Detective, you want to fill me in.”

“Sir, this is Raphael Dawson.” He pointed to me. “And this is Conner MacClennen. Sir, Raph was involved, maybe it would be better coming from him.”

The Captain turned to me, “Raph is it?” We shook hands.

“Yes, Sir.” I filled him in.

“And why were these guys following you,” The Captain asked.

“Sorry sir, I never got a chance to ask them.” Sometimes I wish I could stop myself.

He stepped closer to me, “sir, you might think of this as a reason for levity but I assure you I do not. One of my officers was shot at several times and was forced to kill the man shooting at him. And on top of that, I have civilian being chased through my town and shooting others down to top it.”

Hill tried to jump in, “Sir it-”

I cut him off. “Captain, if you will take a look at my truck behind me you will see I had no choice but to return fire.” Officer Howard had wondered over while the Captain and I were getting heated.

Howard said, “Captain even before their car stopped they were shooting. And this gentleman was the one who saved me.
